Where is the OBD port? Locations by brand and body type
Regulation puts the diagnostic socket within reach of the driver, but manufacturers hide it behind panels, ashtrays and fuse box covers. Here is where to look, by make.
The rule says the diagnostic connector must be within reach of the driver’s seating position and must not require tools to access. Manufacturers interpret “accessible” generously, so the socket ends up behind trim panels, inside ashtrays and under coin trays.
What you are looking for
A trapezoid socket with sixteen pins in two rows, roughly the width of two fingers. It is usually black, sometimes white or yellow. It may have a hinged cover or a rubber cap.
Search the four usual zones first
Ninety percent of cars put it in one of these:
- Under the dashboard, above the pedals. Kneel in the footwell and look up towards the steering column. This is the most common location by a wide margin.
- Behind a small removable panel in the driver’s footwell or on the lower dash trim. The panel usually unclips by hand.
- Beside the steering column, left or right of it depending on drive side.
- Inside or behind the fuse box cover on the end of the dashboard, visible only with the door open.
Bring a torch. The socket is dark plastic in a dark space, and people miss it repeatedly before finding it exactly where they first looked.
Where specific makes tend to hide it
Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda, SEAT. Usually below the steering column, sometimes behind a small flap on the lower trim. On some Golf and Octavia generations it sits above the pedals pointing downwards. Coding conventions for this group: VAG long coding cheatsheet.
BMW and MINI. Under the dash on the driver’s side, often behind a hinged cover that looks like part of the trim. On older E-series it can be near the bonnet release.
Mercedes-Benz. Below the steering wheel, frequently behind a small flip-down panel. On some models it is angled sharply upwards, which makes chunky adapters awkward.
Ford. Below the steering column, usually exposed. On Transit vans it may be near the handbrake or under a dash panel — Ford Transit OBD diagnostics.
Toyota and Lexus. Under the dash on the driver’s side, often quite far back and pointing down. On some models it hides behind a coin tray that pulls straight out.
Honda. Driver’s side under the dash, sometimes tucked well up behind the trim.
Renault, Dacia, Peugeot, Citroën. Frequently behind the ashtray or in the storage cubby by the gear lever, which surprises people. On some Renault models it is under a flap in the centre console.
Nissan. Under the dash near the bonnet release, or behind a small panel in the footwell.
Hyundai and Kia. Below the steering column, usually easy to reach and exposed.
Volvo. Below the dash on the driver’s side, occasionally behind a panel near the centre console.
Vans and pickups generally. Often near the handbrake, in the centre console, or under a dash panel — packaging is tighter, so the socket goes wherever it fits.

Awkward cases
Behind the ashtray. Common on French cars. The ashtray or cubby liner pulls out; the socket is behind it.
Under a coin tray or storage bin. Toyota and some Japanese models. Lift the tray out.
Angled hard against the trim. Some Mercedes and BMW positions leave very little room. A short extension cable solves it and is worth having.
Blocked by an aftermarket install. Trackers, alarms and insurance dongles are frequently plugged into the socket and left there, or spliced into it. If yours is occupied, that is why. Related: aftermarket accessories electrical faults.
Cars with no OBD-II socket
If you genuinely cannot find one, check the age. OBD-II became mandatory for petrol cars in the EU from 2001 and diesels from 2004; in the US from 1996. Before that, manufacturers used proprietary connectors that generic tools cannot read.

Found it but nothing happens
A socket that is present but dead is a different problem, and usually a fuse: OBD port has no power.
A socket that has power but will not connect points at the adapter or the pairing: ELM327 not connecting to phone.

Start with the basics rather than trying to read everything at once: your first OBD scan.
