Can an OBD adapter drain your battery? Measuring the real current
Pin 16 is permanently live, so a plugged-in adapter never truly switches off. Whether that matters depends on a number you can measure, and on how long the car sits.
Leaving the adapter plugged in is convenient. It is also drawing current from your battery every second the car is parked, because pin 16 of the diagnostic socket is wired directly to the battery with no ignition switch in between.
Whether that matters is arithmetic, and the numbers are worth knowing.
What the car draws on its own
A modern car parked overnight is not asleep. Alarm, immobiliser, body module, clock and various sleeping controllers all draw something. Normal quiescent draw is 20 to 50 mA once everything has gone to sleep, which takes anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour after locking.
Anything above about 80 mA is generally treated as a parasitic drain worth investigating — see parasitic battery drain diagnostics.
What an adapter adds
It varies enormously by design, and this is where cheap hardware bites.

A well-behaved adapter adds a rounding error. A poor one can double the car’s entire quiescent draw or worse.
Doing the arithmetic
A typical car battery holds around 60 Ah, and you should not discharge it below roughly half if you want it to last and still start the car.
Usable capacity is therefore about 30 Ah, or 30,000 mAh.
- Car alone at 30 mA: roughly 1000 hours — about six weeks.
- Car plus a good adapter at 35 mA: roughly 850 hours — about five weeks.
- Car plus a bad adapter at 80 mA: roughly 375 hours — about two weeks.
So on a car driven daily, even a mediocre adapter is harmless. On a car that sits for a fortnight, a bad one is the difference between starting and not starting.

Measuring your own adapter
The honest way, with a multimeter in current mode:
- Let the car sleep fully. Lock it, wait 30 minutes, and do not open a door — opening one wakes everything and restarts the clock.
- Measure current between the battery negative terminal and the disconnected negative cable.
- Note the figure. Then unplug the adapter and note it again.
The difference is your adapter’s draw. Method detail: car battery drain, parasitic.
Without a meter, there is a rough test: leave the car a week with the adapter in, then a week without, and compare cranking. Crude, but it catches the badly behaved ones.
Beyond the current draw
Two other things happen when an adapter lives in the socket permanently.
Some adapters keep modules awake. By holding the K-line or CAN bus active, a poorly designed adapter can prevent the car from entering sleep at all. The car then draws its full awake current — several hundred milliamps — and flattens the battery in days. This is far more damaging than the adapter’s own consumption, and it is a real failure mode on cheap clones.
Physical exposure. A dongle hanging under the dash near the pedals is in the way of feet and bags. It gets kicked, and eventually a pin bends or the socket cracks.
Practical policy
- Daily driver: leaving a good adapter plugged in is fine.
- Car parked more than a week: unplug it.
- Storage over winter: unplug it, and read car after long storage checklist.
- Older or weak battery: unplug it. A tired battery has far less margin — battery replacement and registration.
- Any adapter you suspect: measure it once and then stop wondering.
Adapters that switch off properly
The behaviour to look for is a genuine low-power sleep after a period without a connection, waking on Bluetooth or on bus activity. Better adapters document this; clones claim it and do not implement it.

If the battery is already flat
Do not assume the adapter is guilty. A flat battery has many causes, and the adapter is often blamed because it is the newest thing in the car. Work through alternator charging diagnostics and the parasitic draw method above before deciding.
Try it on the free tier of the app — pair an ELM327 adapter and log battery voltage at each start over a couple of weeks. A resting voltage that trends downward day by day is the clearest evidence of a drain, whatever is causing it.
