Humming that rises with speed: bearing, tyre or driveline
Three causes, and a free road test that separates them. Doing that test first stops people buying tyres for a bearing problem.
A hum that grows louder with road speed has three common sources. They sound similar from the driver’s seat and cost very different amounts to fix.

The load test, and it costs nothing
The single most useful diagnostic, performed on a safe open road at the speed where the noise is clearest.
- Drive straight and note the noise.
- Gently steer left, as if changing lanes, holding the curve.
- Gently steer right the same way.

Loading a bearing makes a failing one louder. That is why the noise changes side to side, and it identifies the corner without lifting the car.
Tyre noise
The most common cause of a hum, and the most commonly misattributed to bearings.
Signatures of tyre noise:
- Changes with road surface — loud on coarse tarmac, quiet on smooth.
- Does not change when cornering gently.
- Often accompanied by uneven wear you can feel by hand.
Feel the tread. Run a hand around each tyre. A “sawtooth” pattern, where each block is worn at an angle, produces a distinct hum and can be felt easily.
Causes of that wear: alignment out of specification, worn suspension components, or tyres never rotated.
Tyre rotation and wear patterns, inner edge tyre wear and wheel balancing vs alignment.
A rotation sometimes moves the noise rather than fixing it, which is itself confirmation that the tyres are the source.
Wheel bearing
The classic growl or hum that rises with speed and responds to the load test.
Progression: a faint hum at higher speeds, growing louder and appearing at lower speeds, eventually becoming a growl audible at 30 km/h.
A failing bearing does not fix itself and eventually has real consequences — play in the hub affects braking and, in the worst case, the wheel.
On many vehicles the ABS reluctor ring is part of the bearing, so a failing bearing can also set wheel speed sensor codes: C0035 to C0050 wheel speed sensor codes and ABS wheel speed sensor diagnostics.
Driveline
Less common on front-wheel-drive cars, more so on rear-wheel and four-wheel-drive.
A differential or transfer case whine typically differs between acceleration and overrun — that difference is gear mesh, and it is the distinguishing feature.

Oil that has never been changed is the usual cause, and a change at the whining stage sometimes prevents a rebuild.
The other checks worth doing
Jack it up and spin each wheel by hand. A bad bearing is often audible or felt as roughness.
Rock each wheel at twelve and six o’clock, then three and nine. Play indicates a bearing or a suspension joint.
Check tyre pressures. Underinflation increases noise and causes the wear that makes it worse.
What it is not
A hum that varies with engine speed rather than road speed is not any of the above. Hold a steady road speed and change gear — if the noise changes, it is engine-related.
Whistling from the engine bay.
A hum accompanied by vibration through the steering wheel points at balance rather than bearings: car shakes at motorway speed and steering wheel vibration causes.
In what order
- The load test — steer gently each way at the noise speed.
- Note whether the road surface changes it.
- Feel the tread on all four tyres.
- Check pressures.
- Rock and spin each wheel with the car raised.
- Compare acceleration and overrun for a driveline whine.
- Read wheel speed sensor codes, which can point at a failing bearing.
