Balancing or alignment: two different symptoms people confuse
Vibration at speed and uneven tyre wear are different problems with different fixes. How to tell them apart.
“Balance it and do the alignment” gets said as one phrase, as if it were one procedure. In fact they are different jobs for different symptoms, and the confusion costs money.
Balancing
What it does: corrects uneven mass distribution in the assembled wheel — tyre plus rim.
The symptom: vibration at speed, usually in a narrow band — appearing around 50–60 mph and sometimes disappearing above it.
Where it is felt: front wheels through the steering, rear wheels through the body and seat.
When to do it:
- At every tyre change.
- At every seasonal changeover.
- After a pothole strike — even without visible damage; covered in the pothole article.
- After losing a weight — visible as a clean mark on the rim.
- Whenever vibration appears.
Alignment
What it does: sets the wheel angles relative to the body — camber, toe, and caster.
The symptom: uneven tyre wear and pulling; covered in the pulling article.
A steering wheel sitting off-centre on a straight road belongs here too.
When to do it:
- After replacing any suspension or steering component.
- After a heavy pothole strike.
- When tread wear is uneven; the patterns are covered in the tyre wear article.
- Annually as prevention.
- After a ride height change.
Telling them apart by symptom
Vibration at speed → balancing.
Uneven wear and pulling → alignment.
Vibration under braking → neither: that is the brakes; covered in the brake judder article.
A hum rising with speed → a bearing or tyres; covered in the humming article.
Practical advice: doing both “just in case” is not harmful but not always needed. The symptom points more precisely.
Why alignment without calibration is half the job
The most important modern detail.
The steering angle sensor measures position against its own zero. After the geometry is set, the physical wheel position changed while the sensor’s zero did not.
The consequence: the stability module believes the wheel is turned when it is straight. Then come incorrect interventions and codes.

On cars with driver assistance, camera and radar calibration is added after a geometry or height change.
What to watch in diagnostics
Steering angle in live data — near zero with the wheel straight.
Stability control codes — they appear when model and reality diverge.
The four wheel speeds — a discrepancy indicates different diameters.
