Airbag light on: causes, and why generic scanners often miss it
An illuminated SRS lamp means the airbags are disabled and will not deploy. The cause is usually a connector under a seat, and the code is usually invisible to a basic reader.
The SRS lamp is the one warning light where the consequence is unambiguous: while it is lit, the airbag system has disabled itself and will not deploy in a collision.
That is not a degraded mode or a precaution. The module has detected a fault it cannot verify around and has taken the system offline rather than risk an unintended or asymmetric deployment.
Why your code reader shows nothing
This is the most common source of confusion. You plug in, the app says “no codes found”, and the light is still on.
Nothing is broken. Generic OBD-II is an emissions standard. It guarantees access to powertrain data and emissions codes. The airbag module is not part of that, and reading it requires manufacturer-level protocols.
So a basic reader talking to the engine module honestly reports no engine faults, while the SRS module sits there with a stored code it was never asked for. Detail: scan tool limits, what OBD cannot see and B1000 body control codes.
The causes, in order of likelihood
1. The connector under a front seat
By a wide margin the most common cause, and often the cheapest.
Seat airbags, occupancy sensors and seat belt pretensioners connect through a plug beneath the seat. Every time the seat slides, that harness flexes. Vacuum cleaners catch it. Passengers kick it. Eventually a pin backs out or a wire breaks internally.
The tell: the light appears after someone adjusted the seat, after a valet, or after something was retrieved from under the seat.
2. Clockspring in the steering column
The clockspring is a flat ribbon cable that maintains the electrical connection to the driver’s airbag while the wheel turns. It wears out — and when it does, the horn and steering wheel controls usually fail at the same time.

3. Seat belt pretensioner or buckle switch
The pretensioners are part of the SRS system, and the buckle switches report whether belts are fastened. A failing buckle switch sets an SRS code. Related: seat belt pretensioner warnings.
4. Water damage to the module
The SRS control module frequently sits low — under a seat, under the centre console, or in a footwell. Blocked sunroof drains, a leaking screen seal or a blocked scuttle drain put water directly onto it.
Check the carpets. Damp footwell plus SRS light is not a coincidence: damp carpet and electrical faults, water leak into cabin, sunroof drain blockage.
5. Low battery voltage
A weak battery causes modules to brown out and store faults during cranking. If the light appears at start-up and the car has a tired battery, test the battery under load before anything else.
6. Crash data stored
After any deployment, the module stores crash data and locks itself. It will not clear with a scan tool and generally requires replacement or specialist reset — and any deployed component must be replaced, not reused.

7. Aftermarket seat covers and installs
Seat covers fitted over side airbags can interfere with occupancy sensors, and any aftermarket wiring near seat harnesses is a suspect: aftermarket accessories electrical faults.
Safety rules if you work near it
The SRS system is pyrotechnic. Squibs fire with real force, and they fire fast.
- Disconnect the battery and wait before touching airbag connectors. Capacitors hold charge for minutes; manufacturer guidance on the waiting period exists for a reason.
- Never probe a squib circuit with a multimeter. The test current can be sufficient to trigger deployment.
- Yellow connectors are the industry convention for SRS circuits. Treat every yellow connector as live.
- Do not point a removed airbag module at yourself or anyone else.
What not to do
Do not fit a resistor to fool the module. This is sold as a fix and is not one. It defeats the fault detection while leaving the system unable to deploy, and it does so silently. In a collision, nothing happens.
Do not simply clear the code. If the fault is still present it returns, and if it does not return you have merely hidden something.
Do not remove the bulb. In many jurisdictions the lamp’s correct operation is itself a test item, and a lamp that never illuminates at ignition-on is a fail — see OBD codes and the emissions test.
Roadworthiness
In most jurisdictions an illuminated airbag warning lamp is a test failure and, more practically, a car with disabled airbags is a car without its primary occupant protection. This is not a light to live with for a year.
Cost expectations
- Reseating or repairing a seat connector: $50–150.
- Clockspring: $80–300 fitted.
- Buckle switch: $60–200.
- Drying out and drain clearing: labour only.
- SRS module: $300–1000 with coding.
- Post-deployment restoration: $1000–3000 per airbag plus modules.
Given how often it is the seat connector, paying a workshop for an SRS scan before assuming the worst is usually money well spent.

For the SRS module itself, be clear-eyed that generic access does not reach it, and take a disabled airbag system to someone with the right equipment.
