The CV boot: a cheap rubber gaiter the whole driveshaft depends on
A crack in a boot turns a cheap repair into a new driveshaft within weeks. The signs, the timescale, and why it cannot wait.
A CV boot is a rubber gaiter costing about as much as lunch, protecting a component costing as much as several services. It is a rare case where the “cheap prevention, expensive consequence” ratio is this obvious.
What it does
Two functions, both critical:
It keeps the grease inside the joint.
It keeps dirt and water out.
The joint is designed to run in clean grease for decades. Without the boot it runs in an abrasive slurry of grit and water.
What happens after it splits
The sequence is fast:
- Centrifugal force throws the grease out — within the first few miles.
- Grit and moisture get in.
- The abrasive destroys the tracks and balls — measured in weeks, not years.

- The driveshaft needs replacing.
The key figure: if the boot is replaced before the clicking starts, the joint is usually saved. After the clicking, it is not.
Signs visible before any noise
Grease traces on the inner face of the wheel — it is flung in a circle and shows clearly.
Grease in the arch and on nearby suspension components.
Cracks in the rubber on inspection — look with the steering on full lock, which stretches the boot and reveals them.
A clip that has come off — also a cause of grease loss with intact rubber.
When to inspect: at every oil change. Five minutes and the cheapest prevention on the car.
Outer and inner
The outer joint — by the wheel, working at large angles. It splits more often, and its wear is heard as clicking on lock.
The inner joint — by the gearbox, working at smaller angles. When worn it produces vibration under acceleration in a straight line rather than clicking.
In practice: vibration under acceleration that disappears at steady throttle is more often an inner joint than “wheel balance”.
Replacement
The boot alone — cheaper, but the shaft has to come off and the joint be dismantled.
As a kit with grease and clips — the correct way it is sold; old grease is never reused.
Split boots fitted without removing the shaft — a quick-repair solution. They last less than proper ones because of the seam, but they beat a torn one.
A complete driveshaft — more expensive but faster; it makes sense once the joint already clicks.
Essential: clean the old contaminated grease out of the joint before packing new. Otherwise the abrasive stays inside.
What diagnostics sees
A scanner cannot see mechanics, but indirect signs exist.
ABS sensor codes — heavy joint wear changes position and sensor gap.
The four wheel speeds — instability on one.
Stability control codes — with vibration the system sees inconsistency.

In short
- The boot keeps grease in and abrasive out; without it the joint lives weeks.
- Replaced before the clicking, the shaft is saved; after it, not.
- Grease on the inner wheel face shows before any noise is heard.

- Vibration under straight-line acceleration is more often an inner joint than balance.
