Brake fluid: why it is changed by the calendar, not by mileage
Fluid absorbs water even while parked, and that is what makes it dangerous exactly where brakes matter most. Grades, testing, and consequences.
Brake fluid is the only consumable that degrades just as fast parked as driven. So its schedule is written in years, and that is not a formality.
Why water
The fluid is hygroscopic: it absorbs moisture from the air through the reservoir breather, the seals, and the hoses. That is not a defect but a property the system needs — water in solution is safer than droplets of water in the circuit.
The problem is the consequences:
- The boiling point falls. New fluid boils high; two or three years of absorbed water lowers it substantially.
- Boiling creates vapour. Vapour compresses — the pedal sinks and the brakes are gone.
- Internal corrosion — water attacks caliper bores and the ABS unit.
When it shows up
The nastiest feature of the subject: old fluid works perfectly until the moment you need it most.
The scenarios where it boils:
- A long mountain descent.
- A series of emergency stops.
- Towing or a fully loaded car.
- Track use or hard driving.
In ordinary urban use there is no perceptible difference at all — which is exactly why the change gets postponed for years.

Grades and compatibility
DOT 3, DOT 4, DOT 5.1 — glycol based, and they mix with each other. They differ in boiling point and viscosity.
DOT 5 is silicone based and does not mix with the others. It must never go into a system designed for glycol fluid.
The main rule: use what the manufacturer specifies. A higher grade is not always better: on cars with ABS and stability control, low-temperature viscosity matters because the module’s response speed depends on it.
How to test it
With a moisture tester — a standard procedure taking a minute at any workshop.
Visually — darkening indicates age but not water content. Clear fluid can be saturated too, so colour is not a criterion.
By level — a drop means a leak or worn pads, not evaporation.
Changing it
Interval — typically every two years, regardless of mileage.
On cars with ABS there is a catch: the module contains circuits that conventional bleeding does not reach. A full change requires a bleed procedure through diagnostics — the scanner cycles the module’s pump and valves.
The consequence of skipping that: the old fluid stays exactly where it matters most, inside the ABS unit.
What diagnostics shows
ABS module codes — pressure sensors, valves, pump.
The fluid level sensor — as a parameter.
The bleed function — precisely what a scanner is needed for here.
Stability control codes — with air or vapour in the circuit the system sees an inadequate pressure response.
In short
