Power steering warning light: electric and hydraulic causes

Electric and hydraulic systems fail in completely different ways and give completely different warnings. Knowing which one you have decides whether this is a fluid check or a scan.

EPS motors have a thermal limit. Repeated full-lock manoeuvres — parallel parking, a three-point turn on a tight drive, manoeuvring a trailer — heat the motor, and the module reduces or cuts assistance to protect it.

The lamp appears, steering goes heavy, and both recover after ten to twenty minutes. This is designed behaviour, not a fault. If your warning only appears after prolonged low-speed manoeuvring and clears on its own, that is what happened.

Low system voltage

EPS draws serious current — tens of amps at full assist. A weak battery or a failing alternator cannot supply it, so the module reduces assistance and logs a fault.

This is the most common genuine cause, and it explains why a power steering warning often appears alongside other electrical oddities. Test the battery under load first — alternator charging diagnostics and battery light on while driving.

Steering angle sensor

The module needs to know wheel position. A sensor that has lost calibration — after an alignment, a rack replacement, or a battery disconnection — can disable assistance. Often accompanied by a stability control lamp.

Torque sensor

Hydraulic systems: what goes wrong

Fluid level

Check first, always. Low fluid means a leak, since these systems do not consume fluid. Look at the rack boots, the hose unions and the pump seals.

Belt

Pump wear

Air in the system

Heavy steering without a warning light

Check the front tyre pressures before anything else. It sounds too simple, and it is genuinely the cause often enough to be worth the two minutes.

What a scan tool contributes

The honest answer is: indirectly, but usefully.

EPS modules are chassis modules, not powertrain, so their codes are frequently outside generic OBD-II access — scan tool limits.

What you can check without manufacturer tools:

  • Control module voltage at idle and under full electrical load. Sagging supply is the leading cause of EPS faults, and this finds it.
  • Whether other U-codes are stored, indicating a network problem rather than a steering problem.
  • Wheel speed data, since EPS depends on vehicle speed.

Those three narrow it considerably before paying for a chassis-capable scan.

  • Power steering fluid and bleed: $60–150.
  • Belt: $30–120 fitted.
  • Steering angle sensor calibration: often under an hour of labour.
  • Hydraulic pump: $200–600.
  • EPS motor or column assembly: $600–2000.

Given the top of that range, ruling out voltage first is not a formality — it is the single most valuable step.

After the repair

Confirm assistance is consistent from lock to lock, at standstill and at speed, and that no warning returns after a cold start. If a steering angle calibration was needed, verify the stability control lamp is also out.
