Speedometer stopped: sensor, cluster or bus
A dead speedometer takes cruise control, the gearbox and sometimes ABS with it. What else stopped working tells you where the fault is.
Road speed is one of the most widely used signals in a vehicle. Losing it affects far more than the needle, and what else stops working is the fastest route to the cause.

Start with what else failed

That table is most of the diagnosis, and it costs nothing to fill in.
Where road speed comes from
Varies by vehicle, and knowing which applies to yours matters.
From the transmission output speed sensor, on many vehicles: P0720 to P0722 output speed sensor.
From the ABS wheel speed sensors, averaged and broadcast by the ABS module: ABS wheel speed sensor diagnostics.
From both, cross-checked, on many modern vehicles.
If the speedometer is dead and the ABS lamp is on, the ABS module is probably the source and it has a problem.
Causes
The sensor
Transmission-mounted sensors are usually accessible and inexpensive. The connector is underneath in the road spray, and corrosion is common.
The reluctor ring
Debris on the toothed wheel adds phantom pulses; damaged teeth remove them. Produces erratic readings rather than a clean loss: P0721 range/performance.
Wiring
Low-level signal, often shielded. Chafing where it passes suspension or exhaust components, and repairs made without maintaining the shield.
The instrument cluster
If everything else that uses road speed works, and only the display is dead, the cluster is the suspect. Cluster faults often affect several gauges together.
The network
If the cluster receives speed as a message and the message is not arriving, the fault is between modules rather than at either end: U0140 and U0155 body and cluster communication and U0073 control module bus off.
Low system voltage
A weak battery makes modules drop off the network, producing symptoms that look like several failures: P0560 to P0563 system voltage faults.
The reading that settles it
Read vehicle speed in live data while driving.

That is a genuinely decisive test, and it takes one drive.
When it reads but reads wrong
A different problem, and usually not a fault.
Wheel and tyre size changes the relationship between wheel rotation and road speed. A significantly different rolling radius makes the speedometer read wrong by a proportional amount.

Speedometers read optimistically by design in most markets — regulation permits reading above true speed but not below. A few percent high is normal and legal.
Compare against a phone GPS on a steady road to establish your own offset.
The odometer consequence
On vehicles where the odometer counts from this signal, a period of driving with a dead sensor means mileage was not recorded.

Note the dates and approximate distance if you drive with the fault, so the record is honest.
Is it legal to drive?
In most jurisdictions a working speedometer is a requirement, and a dead one is an inspection failure.
Beyond legality: without it you are estimating speed, which is a genuine risk in enforcement areas and in poor conditions.
Get it fixed rather than working around it.

- Note what else stopped working.
- Read vehicle speed in live data while driving.
- Check for related codes — speed sensor, ABS, communication.
- Check system voltage if multiple systems are affected.
- Inspect the sensor connector underneath the vehicle.
- Compare against GPS if it reads but reads wrong.
