Heavy steering: why it is often an electronic problem, not a mechanical one

Heavy steering usually gets written off as “the pump died”. In reality the cause depends on the design, and on modern cars it is frequently not the assist unit at all.

The first question to answer: which type of assist do you have.

Hydraulic: simple and mechanical

A belt-driven pump, a reservoir, hoses, and the rack.

Causes by probability:

  1. Low fluid level. The most common. Signature: the pump whines when you turn, and steering is heavier parked than moving.

Cause 3: the steering angle sensor

The module needs to know where the wheel is. The sensor lives in the column and requires calibration after a battery replacement, column removal, or a wheel alignment.

Cause 4: loss of bus communication

After prolonged manoeuvring in a car park, electric assist may temporarily reduce effort to cool down. That is designed behaviour and passes within minutes.

  1. Establish the assist type — everything else follows from it.
  2. Hydraulic: open the reservoir, check level, fluid condition, and the belt.
  3. Electric: check running voltage.
  4. Read codes across every system, not just the engine’s: C- and U-series matter here.
  5. Check whether the speedometer works.
  6. Recall what was done before the symptom appeared — battery replacement, alignment, suspension work.
