P0715: input/turbine speed sensor faults and erratic shifting
The turbine speed sensor is how the gearbox knows what the torque converter is doing. Lose it and shift quality collapses, but the cause is often a magnet covered in swarf rather than a failed sensor.
P0715 “Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Malfunction” removes one of the three numbers an automatic gearbox needs to do its job properly.
The three speeds a gearbox compares
- Engine speed — from the crankshaft sensor.
- Input/turbine speed — the speed of the torque converter’s turbine, which is the gearbox input shaft.
- Output speed — the speed leaving the gearbox towards the wheels.
From these the TCM derives everything that matters:
- Engine speed vs turbine speed = torque converter slip. Essential for locking the converter clutch smoothly.
- Turbine speed vs output speed = the actual gear ratio achieved, which is what P0730 checks.
- Rate of change during a shift = shift quality feedback, used to trim clutch apply pressure.
Lose the middle number and the TCM is working blind on the most important comparison it makes.
What you feel
- Harsh, delayed or unpredictable shifts, because the TCM cannot trim apply pressure with feedback.
- Torque converter clutch behaving badly — either refusing to lock, or locking abruptly. Related: P0740 and P0741.
- Flare between gears, where engine RPM rises briefly mid-shift.
- Limp mode, often locked in third gear.
- Sometimes no obvious symptom at all, just the light. Adaptive strategies compensate surprisingly well until they cannot.
Why the sensor is often not the problem
Most turbine speed sensors are simple magnetic or Hall-effect pickups reading a toothed wheel. There is very little to fail. What fails around them:
Metallic debris on the sensor tip
The sensor’s magnet is a debris collector inside a gearbox full of clutch material and, on a worn box, metal particles. A furred-up tip reads intermittently. Pulling the sensor and cleaning it is a genuine repair — and the amount of debris on the tip is also a free condition report on the gearbox as a whole.
Heavy metallic paste on the magnet means the transmission has internal wear, and a clean sensor buys time rather than fixing the cause.
Wiring and connector
The transmission connector runs hot and sits in fluid vapour. Corroded pins and fluid wicking up the harness are common. On some designs, fluid tracks along the wires all the way to the TCM connector.
Air gap
If the sensor mounting has been disturbed, the gap between tip and tone wheel matters. Too far and the signal amplitude drops below the threshold.
Tone wheel damage
Rare, but a chipped or cracked tone ring produces a signal that drops out at one point per revolution.
Fluid level and condition
Aerated fluid from a low level, or fluid so degraded it foams, disrupts the whole hydraulic picture and produces speed sensor complaints alongside everything else. Always check this first — automatic transmission ATF diagnostics.
Diagnosing it with live data
The most informative test needs no tools beyond the adapter.
Log engine RPM and turbine speed together, then drive gently.

At a standstill in Drive with the brake applied, turbine speed should read zero or near zero while the engine idles — that is the converter slipping as designed. Pull away and it should rise smoothly.
Because this code usually lives in the transmission module, a basic tool may show only P0700.
Do not skip the adaptation reset
After repairing a speed sensor fault, the TCM’s learned shift adaptations are based on months of bad data. Many gearboxes shift poorly until the adaptations are reset and relearned over a few dozen miles. If shift quality is still wrong after a correct repair, this is usually why.
Cost expectations
- Clean and refit sensor: labour only, often under an hour.
- Speed sensor: $40–150.
- Connector or harness repair: $50–250.
- Fluid and filter service: $120–350.
After the repair
Drive through the full gear range, cold and warm, and confirm turbine speed tracks cleanly with no dropouts. Then check that the converter clutch locks and unlocks smoothly at cruise. Clear codes in both modules.
Try it on the free tier of the app — pair an ELM327 adapter and graph engine RPM against turbine speed. The gap between those two lines at cruise is torque converter slip, and watching it is the earliest warning of trouble a gearbox will give you.
