How the EVAP monitor tests for leaks, and why it needs half a tank
The fussiest test on the car. Knowing its conditions is the difference between a week of aimless driving and a readiness status that completes.
Petrol evaporates. A vehicle standing in the sun emits hydrocarbons from its fuel tank unless something prevents it, and the evaporative emissions system is that something.
Testing it for leaks is harder than testing anything else on the car, which is why the EVAP monitor is the one that will not complete when you need it to.

The system, briefly
Vapour from the tank is captured in a charcoal canister. The purge valve later draws that vapour into the engine to be burnt, and the vent valve lets fresh air in to replace it.
To test for leaks, the ECU seals the system by closing the vent valve, then either applies vacuum through the purge valve or watches natural pressure change, and looks for the pressure to hold.
A leak means it does not hold.
Two testing approaches
Vacuum decay. The purge valve draws the system down to a small vacuum, both valves close, and the ECU watches how fast the vacuum bleeds away. Fast bleed means a leak.
Natural vacuum. After the engine is switched off, the fuel and vapour cool and contract, creating vacuum without any pumping. The ECU monitors pressure while the vehicle is parked. Elegant, and it requires an overnight soak.
Some vehicles use a small pump to pressurise instead.
Why the conditions are so narrow
Each requirement exists for a physical reason.

Miss one and the test waits for the next opportunity. That is why it can take days.
What this means practically
Before an emissions test
Do not clear codes the day before. Clearing resets every monitor, and a vehicle with incomplete monitors fails on that basis alone.
Instead: fix, clear, then drive normally for several days with roughly half a tank, and check readiness before booking.

After an EVAP repair
Verification is slow by nature. A cleared code and no lamp is not proof, because the monitor has not yet run.
Check readiness rather than the absence of a lamp: Mode 0A permanent DTCs.
When readiness will not complete
Check the fuel level first. A tank kept nearly full — common for people who top up at every opportunity — can block this monitor indefinitely.
Run it down to about half and drive normally. That single change resolves a lot of stuck readiness.

The leak sizes it distinguishes

A 0.5 mm leak is smaller than most cracks you can see. Finding it visually is not realistic; a smoke test is the practical method.
The things that are not leaks
Worth ruling out, because they set leak codes:
- The vent valve stuck open, so the system cannot be sealed at all: P0447 to P0449 vent control circuit.
- The purge valve stuck open, which prevents holding vacuum: P0443 to P0445 purge valve circuit.
- A faulty pressure sensor, which is the instrument doing the measuring: P0451 to P0453 EVAP pressure sensor.
Check the sensor before chasing a leak. A wrong reading produces leak codes on a sealed system.
Habits that cause EVAP problems
Overfilling. Continuing after the pump clicks off pushes liquid fuel into the charcoal canister and destroys it. Canisters are not cheap, and this is entirely avoidable.
Never topping up. A tank kept below a quarter blocks the monitor.
Cross-threading the cap, or using a generic replacement that does not seal to the tested pressure.
