The drive cycle: how to actually complete readiness monitors instead of driving in circles
After clearing codes the monitors drop to not ready, and no emissions test will overlook it. What the ECU checks at each stage, why one long trip does not help, and the order to drive in.
A familiar situation: the fault was repaired, the code cleared, the car went for testing — and failed, because the readiness monitors read not ready. Or a second situation: a car is for sale, and the seller genuinely cannot understand why “everything is clean” makes buyers suspicious.
Both have the same solution — drive the cycle properly. “Properly” is the operative word, because simply covering two hundred highway miles usually does not work.
What a monitor is and why it resets
The control module does not test every system continuously. Each one has a self-test that runs only when the right conditions align: a certain temperature, a certain RPM band, a stable speed, a certain fuel level in the tank.
A monitor is a flag meaning “my test has run since the last reset”. Clear the memory or disconnect the battery and every flag drops to not ready. Each then has to come back individually, and each needs its own conditions. The monitors themselves are covered in their own guide.
Which is why “I’ll drive for a week and it will sort itself out” is not always true. If your usual route is two miles to work, some tests will never run at all.
Why one long trip does not fix it
The main trap: most tests require a cold start. Not merely “the engine cooled down”, but specifically coolant temperature below roughly 95 °F at start-up and close to intake air temperature.
So one 200-mile trip gives you exactly one cold start. The catalyst or EVAP monitor may need two or three complete cycles. Hence the rule: what matters is the number of proper cold starts, not the distance.
A universal cycle
Factory procedures differ by make, but this sequence works on most vehicles.
Preparation
- The tank filled to roughly between a quarter and three quarters. This is critical: the EVAP test will not run on a full or nearly empty tank.
- The car has stood for at least 8 hours — you need a genuinely cold engine.
- No active codes stored. Tests do not run while a fault is present.
Stage 1: idle, 2–3 minutes
Start and let it run unloaded, air conditioning off. Some ignition system and oxygen sensor heater tests complete here.
Stage 2: accelerate to 25–40 mph
Smoothly, no hard throttle. Hold that speed for 3–5 minutes. The engine warms to operating temperature and fuel system tests are enabled.
Stage 3: steady 50–60 mph for 5–10 minutes
The most important stage. Constant speed without abrupt pedal changes is the condition for catalyst and oxygen sensor tests. Cruise control helps here.
Stage 4: decelerate with the throttle closed
Release the pedal fully and let the car slow to about 20 mph without braking. This triggers the overrun fuel cut condition required by some EGR tests.
Stage 5: idle, 2 minutes
Stop and let it idle. The idle-related tests finish.
Stage 6: repeat the next day
After the engine has fully cooled. The second iteration closes monitors that need two confirmations.
What usually refuses to complete

If a monitor has not completed after three full cycles, the problem is not your driving style — it is a fault. The test is running and failing, which is now something to investigate. Most often it is EVAP, which points toward evaporative leaks.
How many monitors may stay not ready
Petrol vehicles are typically permitted one incomplete monitor, diesels up to two. Exact requirements depend on the country and model year, so check local rules before testing.
The practical takeaway: you do not need a perfect picture. Closing everything except the one stubborn monitor is usually enough.
Common mistakes
- Clearing codes right before the test. The worst possible move: every monitor instantly not ready.
- Filling the tank before the cycle. EVAP will not run.
- Driving strictly in town. There is no constant-speed stage.
- Not letting the car cool between iterations. Without a cold start the second cycle does not count.
