P0451 to P0453: EVAP pressure sensor range and circuit

The practical rule, and it saves a great deal of wasted work.

If you have a pressure sensor code and a leak code together, the sensor comes first. A sensor reading incorrectly produces leak codes for a system with no leak, and people spend days smoke-testing a sealed tank.

What a healthy reading looks like

With the fuel cap off and the system open to atmosphere, tank pressure should read approximately zero, or atmospheric depending on how your vehicle reports it.

That is the reference test, and it takes thirty seconds.

Causes

The connector

The sensor is usually on top of the fuel tank or in the vapour line under the car. Same environment as the vent valve: road spray, salt, grit.

Corrosion at that connector is the most common cause of the circuit codes.

The shared 5 V reference

A short in this sensor drags down the reference shared with other sensors. If P0452 arrives together with MAP, throttle position and other sensor codes, do not diagnose five sensors — diagnose the reference.

The sensor itself

Sensing elements drift with age. A sensor reading a constant small offset will eventually fall outside the plausibility window and set P0451.

A blocked port

The sensor connects to the tank through a small port or hose. Debris or fuel in that path means the sensor reads the wrong thing while being perfectly healthy itself.

  2. Read tank pressure with the cap off — the reference test.
  3. Remove and refit the cap and watch for a change.
  4. Inspect the connector for corrosion.
  5. Check the port or hose to the tank for blockage.
  6. Replace the sensor only after the above.
  7. Drive a full cycle and confirm the EVAP monitor completes.
