HVO diesel: what this fuel is and whether you can put it in your engine

Pumps increasingly carry an HVO or XTL marking. It looks like diesel, goes into the same tank, and raises plenty of questions.
What it is
HVO is diesel fuel produced not from crude oil but from vegetable oils and fats treated with hydrogen.
The key difference from older bio-blends: it is not a blend. Previous-generation biodiesel was mixed into ordinary diesel and brought its own problems — water absorption, separation in the cold, aggressiveness toward older rubber seals.
HVO is chemically very close to conventional diesel, so it behaves in the system almost identically.
How it differs in the engine
Higher cetane number. The fuel ignites more readily, which means smoother running, easier cold starting, and slightly less noise.
Less soot during combustion — a direct benefit to the particulate filter. Lower loading, less frequent regenerations; filter mechanics in the DPF guide.
Better cold behaviour, because it lacks the plant-derived waxes that were the old biodiesel’s weakness.
It does not absorb water the way biodiesel does. That removes the main winter problem — condensation in the fuel filter.
Slightly lower energy density. Consumption may rise by 1–3 %. That difference sits within measurement error, so noticing it requires the “full tank, 250 miles, full tank” method; the methodology is in the fuel consumption article.
Who it suits and who it does not
The main rule: check the manufacturer’s approval.
Many modern diesel engines are officially approved for HVO — indicated in the manual or by a sticker near the filler neck reading XTL.
No approval does not mean the fuel will cause damage. It means the manufacturer made no commitment. On a car under warranty the question is worth putting to the dealer.
Be more cautious with:
- Very old diesels with older-type rubber seals.
- Engines with troubled injection systems, where any fuel change exposes existing weak points.
What changes in the data
Expectations need calibrating immediately: fuel type cannot be read over OBD. The control module does not know what you put in — it works from feedback.
What is visible indirectly:
Fuel trims. Because of the lower energy density the module may deliver slightly more fuel. A shift of a few percent is normal, not a fault. Reading them is covered in STFT and LTFT.
Particulate filter regeneration statistics. This is where the effect is clearest: less soot means less frequent regenerations. If you switched to HVO and the distance between regenerations grew, that is it.
Fuel rail pressure — it should stay normal. A gap between commanded and actual means an injection system problem rather than a fuel one; codes P0087, P0089.
Easier cold starting — noticeable subjectively, measurable as a shorter time to stable idle.
Can you mix it with ordinary diesel
Yes. Unlike air conditioning refrigerants, where mixing is unacceptable, the fuels are compatible: you can top up in any proportion.
That removes the main practical worry: if HVO runs out along your route, you simply fill with ordinary diesel.
What it does not solve
Honestly about the limits.
- It does not clear a clogged particulate filter. Less soot is prevention, not cleaning. A filter blocked with ash is not saved by HVO; the soot-versus-ash distinction is in the GPF article.
- It does not compensate for a short-trip usage pattern. Twenty minutes of highway running every couple of weeks is still required.
- It does not add power. Cetane number affects combustion character, not output.
- It does not fix a worn injection system.
The practical takeaway
- Check the sticker near the filler neck — an XTL marking means official approval.
- On a warranty car without approval, ask the dealer.
- Mixing is fine, so the experiment is safe.
- Judge the effect by data, not feel: consumption by the full-tank method, distance between regenerations.
- Do not expect miracles — this is fuel, not a repair.
