Dashboard lights flickering: earth, alternator or module
Flickering instruments are a supply problem until proven otherwise, and the cheapest possible cause is the one to check first.
Instrument lighting flickering, gauges twitching, or warning lamps blinking on and off means the voltage feeding them is unstable.
Almost always that is a connection rather than a component, and the connections worth checking cost nothing to inspect.

When it happens narrows it immediately

“Over bumps” is the most useful answer, because it means mechanical rather than electrical, and mechanical faults can be found by hand.
Check these first, in order
1. Battery terminals
Corroded or loose. Free to fix, and genuinely the most common cause of unstable voltage on any vehicle.
Look for white or green powder, and try to move each clamp by hand — it should not move at all.
2. Earth straps
Engine-to-body, and body-to-battery. They carry all the return current and they corrode where they bolt to the body.
A bad earth causes symptoms that look like a dozen different faults, because every circuit shares the return path. It is the single most under-checked item in automotive electrics.
Undo, clean both surfaces to bright metal, refit tight.
3. The battery itself
Test under load, not by reading voltage at rest.
4. The alternator
Output too low, or unstable. A failing diode produces AC ripple on the supply, which is exactly what flickering looks like.
Note that smart charging systems vary voltage deliberately — between about 12.5 V and 15 V depending on conditions. That is designed behaviour, not a fault: smart alternators and regenerative charging.
5. The drive belt
A slipping belt drives the alternator inconsistently, particularly when wet: serpentine belt wear signs.
6. Aftermarket wiring
Anything installed under the dashboard is a suspect — alarms, dashcams, audio, phone chargers spliced into existing circuits.

The measurement that identifies it
Log system voltage across a full drive, including idle, acceleration and electrical loads switched on.

A single reading cannot show instability. It is a shape on a graph.

Flickering plus other symptoms
The combination tells you how far the problem has spread.
Plus dim headlights at idle: charging output or the belt: headlights dim at idle.
Plus warning lamps appearing and disappearing: modules resetting on unstable voltage.
Plus a scan full of communication codes: the supply, not twelve modules: U0073 control module bus off and when the scanner lies about ghost codes.
Plus a flat battery in the morning: a drain as well: parasitic battery drain diagnostics.
Do not replace modules for this
An instrument cluster is expensive and often needs coding to the vehicle. Replacing one because of flickering caused by a corroded earth strap is entirely avoidable.
Prove the supply is stable under load before anyone quotes for hardware.
Sequence
- Inspect and clean battery terminals.
- Inspect and clean earth straps.
- Load-test the battery.
- Log voltage across a drive with loads switched on.
- Check the belt.
- Check any aftermarket wiring under the dash.
- Clear codes and re-scan once the supply is stable.
You can check this yourself. Pair an ELM327 adapter, open the free tier of the app and log control module voltage over a full drive. A jagged trace is the flicker, recorded, and it points at a connection rather than a component.
