A phone in the car: mounts, charging, and why it overheats
A phone in a car lives in the worst thermal environment there is. Placement, charging, and why a cheap adapter heats and interferes.
A phone in a car is navigation, music, and diagnostics. It also lives in the worst thermal environment available: sun through glass plus heat from charging.
Where to mount it
Never in an airbag deployment zone. The main rule and the most frequently broken: a mount on the passenger side of the dashboard is a direct risk.
Do not obstruct the view — and that includes the mirrors, not just the windscreen.
A vent mount — convenient, but with the air conditioning on the phone cools and with the heater on it warms; a plus in summer and a minus in winter.
The windscreen — secure, but a sucker releases in heat and hardens in frost.
An adhesive dashboard pad — holds better, but the adhesive creeps in heat and the mark is permanent.
The best position is where the phone is visible in peripheral vision without turning your head, and outside any airbag zone.
Why the phone overheats
Sun through the windscreen plus heat from fast charging plus load from navigation — three sources at once.
The consequences: the phone dims, slows, stops charging, and with repeated overheating the battery degrades quickly.
What helps:
- Keep it out of direct sun.
- Use slow charging in heat — it generates less heat.
- Disable wireless charging in heat: it runs hotter than a cable.
- Keep the phone in the airflow from a vent.
- Remove the case during long navigation in heat.
Charging and adapters
A cheap socket adapter means more than slow charging.
What is wrong with it:
- Interference on the vehicle supply. An unfiltered switching converter injects noise audible in the audio system and occasionally affecting the radio and the key fob receiver.
- The adapter itself heats up.
- Voltage drop along a long thin cable.
What to choose: an adapter from a known manufacturer with adequate output and a short quality cable.
The socket is often dead with the ignition off — normal and even useful: the device draws nothing while parked.
Wireless charging
Upside: convenient.
Downsides:
- It runs hotter — some energy becomes heat.
- It works poorly through a thick case.
- It can interfere with a key card or fob left nearby.
- It is slower than a cable in most cases.
In heat, use a cable.
The phone as a diagnostic tool
Its most useful role in the car.

Worth remembering:
- Keep the phone charged — roadside diagnostics is needed precisely when things are bad.
