What ABS bleed is

The ABS module has 8+ valves (inlet + outlet per wheel × 4 wheels) and a piston pump. During ABS action these valves open/close at 15-20 Hz — controlling pressure per circuit.

  • Air enters ABS valves → stays there because valves are closed at rest

Classic bleed (no scanner):

  • Toyota / Lexus pre-2015 — module supports “self-bleed” via pedal press 100× (really)
  • Honda / Acura pre-2018
  • Mazda pre-2020
  • Older cars without ESC (4-channel ABS only)

How to do it via VCDS (VAG example)

  1. VCDS → Module 03 (ABS Brakes)
  2. Basic Settings or Guided Fault Finding
  3. Group 001 “ABS Bleeding”
  4. Press Start
  5. Follow on-screen prompts:
    • Bleed right rear caliper (hold pedal, open bleeder, wait)
    • Bleed left rear
    • Bleed right front
    • Bleed left front
  6. Stop, check pedal

  • Don’t try to “bleed” ABS via pedal 100 press on VW/BMW/Mercedes — doesn’t work
  • Don’t fill ABS with high-pressure fluid pump without cycling valves — fluid won’t reach the modulator
  • Don’t swap DOT-4 for DOT-5 — silicone is incompatible with ABS rubber components

Prevention

  • Change brake fluid every 2 years (DOT-4 is hygroscopic — absorbs 3-4% water/year → corrosion + boiling point drop)
  • Every 3-6k mi — visual fluid level check
  • Don’t mix brands — stick with one manufacturer
