ABS bleeding via scan tool: why "the normal way" won't bleed the air out, and how OBD activates the valves
How to bleed brakes with ABS: activate the ABS pump via OBD scanner, why air stays in the module manually, which cars support self-bleed.
After replacing brake hoses, calipers, master cylinder or any system opening — brakes must be bled. But on ABS cars air stays in the hydraulic modulator (ABS valve block) and cannot be pushed out with regular “pedal up-down”. You need an OBD scanner to cycle the valves. Below: how to do it.
What ABS bleed is
The ABS module has 8+ valves (inlet + outlet per wheel × 4 wheels) and a piston pump. During ABS action these valves open/close at 15-20 Hz — controlling pressure per circuit.
After system opening:
- Air enters hoses + calipers → normal bleed pushes it out
- Air enters ABS valves → stays there because valves are closed at rest
Symptom: after “classic” bleed, pedal feels fine but the first ABS activation in a panic stop the pedal drops to the floor, brakes disappear.
How OBD scanner bleeds ABS
Via UDS RoutineControl (manufacturer commands):
- Scanner sends command to ECU: “run ABS bleed cycle”
- ECU activates pump + sequentially opens all 4 wheel valves
- Mechanic holds pedal down and watches bleeder screws for bubble-free flow
- Cycle repeats 2-3 times
Duration: 20-40 min.
Which cars support OBD ABS bleed
Scanner required:
- VW / Audi / Skoda with Bosch ABS 5.7+ (since 2005)
- BMW E9x, F30, G20 — via ISTA
- Mercedes W204, W212, W222 — via Xentry
- Volvo since 2010
- Ford Focus III, Mondeo Mk4 — via IDS
Classic bleed (no scanner):
- Toyota / Lexus pre-2015 — module supports “self-bleed” via pedal press 100× (really)
- Honda / Acura pre-2018
- Mazda pre-2020
- Older cars without ESC (4-channel ABS only)
How to do it via VCDS (VAG example)
- VCDS → Module 03 (ABS Brakes)
- Basic Settings or Guided Fault Finding
- Group 001 “ABS Bleeding”
- Press Start
- Follow on-screen prompts:
- Bleed right rear caliper (hold pedal, open bleeder, wait)
- Bleed left rear
- Bleed right front
- Bleed left front
- Stop, check pedal
Via Car Diagnostics
We don’t implement ABS bleed as an active function (it’s UDS RoutineControl, needs SecurityAccess challenge for some brands). But we:

For actual bleed — VCDS ($240) for VAG, or a shop.
Risks without proper bleed
- Pedal drops in panic braking → crash
- Air compresses under ABS pressure → brakes “vanish” 1-2 sec — critical at speed
- Rear brakes may overheat from uneven pressure
Do NOT
- Don’t try to “bleed” ABS via pedal 100 press on VW/BMW/Mercedes — doesn’t work
- Don’t fill ABS with high-pressure fluid pump without cycling valves — fluid won’t reach the modulator
- Don’t swap DOT-4 for DOT-5 — silicone is incompatible with ABS rubber components
Prevention
- Change brake fluid every 2 years (DOT-4 is hygroscopic — absorbs 3-4% water/year → corrosion + boiling point drop)
- Every 3-6k mi — visual fluid level check
- Don’t mix brands — stick with one manufacturer
