Heat and cars: what fails in summer and why then
Summer loads a car no less than winter, just differently. What suffers from heat and what to check before it arrives.
Winter is habitually treated as the hard season for a car. Summer loads it no less, just differently — which is why summer failures always look sudden.
Batteries die in summer and are discovered in winter
The least obvious fact of the season.
High temperature accelerates electrolyte loss and plate corrosion. The battery degrades in the heat, but that degradation becomes visible in winter, when starting loads rise.
In other words: “the battery died from the cold” usually means “the battery died in summer and the cold revealed it”.

The cooling system
In summer it works at its limit, and any weakness shows up here.
A radiator blocked on the outside — seeds, insects, dust. The most common cause of summer overheating and the cheapest to fix.
The fan — test it before the heat, not in a jam; covered in the fan article.

Air conditioning
The condenser sits in front of the radiator and blocks with the same debris. The consequence is double: the air conditioning cools worse and so does the engine.
Engine load rises: the compressor takes power and the fan runs constantly.
Tyres
Pressure rises with heat — that is normal and allowed for. So measure cold, otherwise you get an inflated figure and let the tyres down below specification.
Hot tarmac plus a worn tyre plus a full load is the classic combination for a motorway blowout.

Cabin electronics
The temperature inside a closed car in the sun far exceeds the outside air. That is a load on everything sitting on the dashboard and in the cabin.
What suffers: phone and mount, a dash cam with a battery, dashboard plastics, adhesive mountings.
A dash cam with a lithium battery is a specific risk: in heat those cells degrade fast and swell. Models using a supercapacitor are more reliable in hot climates.
Sensors and modules in the engine bay run hotter, and weak contacts surface precisely in summer.
What to check before the heat
- Wash the radiator and condenser clear of debris — the cheapest and most effective action.
- Test the fan by switching on the air conditioning.
- Load-test the battery.
- Set pressures on cold tyres.
- Inspect tyres for age and cracking.
- Read the codes — so summer does not start with a surprise.
What to watch in the data
Coolant temperature in traffic and on the motorway — the difference shows the system’s margin.
Fan status and the module’s request.
System voltage — it behaves differently in heat.
Intake air temperature — with a blocked radiator and a hot engine bay it rises, and the engine loses power.
