Speed limiters and driver assistance: what they do and what they do not
A limiter and cruise control are different things, and assistance systems have limits the advertising skips. The functions and their boundaries.
Driver assistance is sold as one package, but the systems work differently and fail in different conditions. Understanding each one’s limits matters more than knowing their names.
A limiter and cruise are different things
Cruise control holds a set speed: it adds throttle and lifts off by itself; covered in the cruise control article.
A speed limiter holds nothing. It simply prevents exceeding the set value: the pedal stops having effect beyond the threshold.
Why a limiter is sometimes better: you drive the car yourself but cannot accidentally exceed the limit. In town that works better than cruise.
An important detail: on most cars the limiter can be overridden by pressing the pedal firmly to the floor — that is deliberate, for overtaking. So it is not a physical barrier.
Sign recognition
A camera reads signs and displays the limit on the cluster.
Where it errs:
- Signs on slip roads and parallel roads — the camera sees what does not apply to your lane.
- Temporary signs on contractors’ trailers.
- Signs on lorries — speed limit decals on the bodywork.
- A dirty or misted camera.
- Signs with supplementary plates — the condition is often not recognised.
The conclusion: the display is a hint, not a source of truth.
Lane keeping
The camera sees the markings and prompts through the steering or a vibration.
Where it does not work:
- Worn or missing markings.
- Snow, heavy rain, fog, strong sun in the lens.
- Roadworks with old and new markings at once.
- Tight corners.
Worth remembering: the system is designed to keep the car in lane, not to steer it. Using it to drive the car is outside its purpose.
Blind spot monitoring
Radars in the bumper — they see worse when dirty, snowed over, or after body repair.
The typical symptom after bumper repair: the system works erratically or disables itself. The cause is not the radar but the fact that it was not recalibrated, or was mounted behind a different material.
Calibration is the main subject
All these systems are referenced to the body geometry.
What requires recalibration:
- Windscreen replacement — the camera.
- Front-end body repair — the radar.
- A wheel alignment — the steering angle sensor; covered in the balancing and alignment article.
- A ride height or wheel size change; covered in the suspension modification article.
The worst case: the system did not disable itself but works with an error. Then it reacts late or in the wrong place, and the driver does not know.
What diagnostics shows
Camera and radar codes — calibration, obstruction, no communication.
Steering angle sensor codes — the basis for path calculation.
Wheel speeds — the basis for every system.
Assistance status in live data — whether each is active now.
In short
- A limiter does not hold speed, it prevents exceeding it — different functions.
- Sign recognition errs on slip roads, lorries, and temporary signs.
- Lane keeping fails without markings and in poor weather.
- Screen replacement, body repair, and alignment all require calibration.
- The worst outcome is not a disabled system but one working with an error.
