Cruise control: when it helps and when it gets in the way
Cruise saves fuel on level motorways and wastes it in hills. The modes, the adaptive version, and its limits.
Cruise control is treated as a comfort feature, and that is only half true: in some conditions it genuinely saves fuel, and in others it uses more than a driver would.
When it helps
A level motorway with light traffic — its native environment. It holds speed more precisely than a foot, and steady speed is the saving; covered in the fuel economy article.
Long journeys — it takes fatigue out of the right leg, which is a concentration matter rather than laziness.
Speed-enforced stretches — it holds exactly what was set.
When it gets in the way
Undulating roads. Cruise cannot see terrain: it does not build speed before a climb, and on the climb it opens the throttle harder than a driver would. An experienced driver gains speed before the rise and lets it fall on the way up — which uses less.
Dense traffic — constant intervention removes the point.
Slippery surfaces. The main safety limitation: on losing grip the system adds throttle in response to falling speed. On wet roads and snow, leave it off.
Winding roads — cornering speed is the driver’s choice.
Adaptive cruise
It maintains distance to the car ahead as well as speed, using radar or a camera.
What it can do: slow and accelerate with the traffic, and on some systems come to a complete stop and pull away again.
Limits worth knowing:
- Bad weather — snow, heavy rain, and dirt on the radar reduce reliability or disable the system.
- Stationary objects — some systems respond worse to a stopped obstacle than a moving one.
- Motorcycles and narrow objects — recognised less reliably.
- A sudden cut-in by another car — there will be a response, but with a delay.
The main rule: adaptive cruise is assistance, not autopilot. Braking remains the driver’s responsibility at all times.
Calibration
Radar and camera are referenced to the body geometry.
What upsets calibration:
- Front-end body repair.
- Windscreen replacement (for the camera).
- A ride height change; covered in the suspension modification article.
- A wheel size change.
The consequence: the system either disables itself with a code or works incorrectly — and the second is worse.
What diagnostics shows
Cruise and radar module codes — obstruction, calibration mismatch, no communication.
Steering angle sensor codes — used to compute the path; covered in the calibration article.
Wheel speeds — the basis of any speed-holding system.
Brake pedal switch status — pressing it cancels cruise; a faulty switch produces “cruise will not engage”.
In short
- On a level motorway cruise beats a foot; in hills it is the reverse.
- Leave it off on wet and slippery surfaces: it adds throttle when grip is lost.
- Adaptive cruise sees stationary objects and narrow vehicles less well.
- Body repair, screen replacement, and wheel changes upset calibration.
- “Cruise will not engage” often means the brake pedal switch.
