Preparing a car for sale: what to fix and what to disclose honestly
A buyer with an adapter will assess your car in twenty minutes. What is worth fixing in advance, what is cheaper to disclose, and why clearing codes before a viewing works against you.
A few years ago preparing a car for sale meant washing and polishing. Today a buyer arrives with a ten-dollar adapter and within twenty minutes knows more about the car than they can see.
That changes the logic of preparation: hiding things is now nearly impossible, but preparing is not.
The main point: do not clear codes before a viewing
This is the most common seller mistake, and it works directly against them.
Clearing memory drops every readiness monitor to not ready, and they only return after a complete drive cycle — several days to a week of driving. Mechanics in the monitors guide.
What the buyer sees: “zero faults + monitors not ready”. That reads unambiguously as the memory was just cleared. And from there they are assessing you rather than the car.
The paradox is that an honest car with one old code makes a better impression than a car with zero codes and reset monitors.
The correct order: fix the cause → clear the code → drive a full cycle a week before the viewing → confirm the monitors read ready.

What is worth fixing in advance
A simple rule: fix what is cheap but looks frightening.
Codes that alarm out of proportion to their cost:
- P0135, P0141 — oxygen sensor heater. Two codes at once often means one fuse; covered separately.
- P0442, P0455 — EVAP. Half the cases are a fuel cap costing a few dollars; see the EVAP guide.
- P0128 — thermostat. Inexpensive, and the buyer immediately notices the engine not warming and a lukewarm heater.
- P0505 — hunting idle. Often cured by throttle cleaning with adaptation; see its own guide.
What most affects subjective impression:
- A cold start with no rattle. P0016 or chain noise is the most expensive objection a buyer can raise; see the P0016 guide.
- A steady idle.
- No misfires — per-cylinder counters are among the first things a buyer checks.
- Voltage in range: 12.4–12.7 V overnight, 13.8–14.4 V running. A weak battery produces a code cascade that looks catastrophic and costs the price of a battery.

What is cheaper to disclose
Not everything is worth fixing before a sale — some of it is cheaper to state yourself.
Expensive work that will not pay back in the price: timing chain, catalyst, particulate filter, transmission repair. You bear the full cost and recover only part of it.
What works better: say it first, before the buyer finds it. “There is a P0420, the catalyst is marginal, which is why the price is below market by this much” reads as honesty. The same code found by the buyer after you said “everything is perfect” reads differently and collapses the negotiation entirely.
What a buyer will definitely check
Prepare for this list — it is public and repeatable:
- Readiness monitors — the first thing looked at.
- Three code types: stored, pending, and permanent. The last cannot be erased by a scan tool at all.
- Freeze frame — it may carry the mileage at the time of the fault. A mismatch against the odometer ends the deal; see detecting odometer fraud.

- Fuel trims and warm-up temperature.

A new layer: accounts and connected services
Something that did not exist five years ago and that almost everyone forgets.
- Unlink the car from your account in the manufacturer’s app. Otherwise you retain the ability to unlock and locate a car that is no longer yours.
- Remove third-party devices from the diagnostic port — insurer telematics, trackers.
- Delete saved phones, addresses, and profiles from the infotainment.

A two-week schedule before the viewing

That last row is unusual, but it is what builds trust: a cold car the seller is not afraid to show is a strong argument.
In short
- Clearing codes before a viewing resets the monitors, and the buyer sees it instantly.
- Fix the cheap things that look frightening: EVAP, sensor heaters, thermostat, battery.
- Expensive work will not pay back — better to state it and reflect it in the price.
- Permanent codes cannot be cleared, and the buyer will see them.
