P0251: injection pump fuel metering control on a diesel
The metering valve decides how much fuel the high pressure pump takes in. When it stops obeying, the whole rail pressure loop loses its main lever.
On a modern common rail diesel, the efficient way to control rail pressure is to only pressurise the fuel you actually need. A metering valve on the inlet side of the high pressure pump does that, throttling how much fuel enters the pumping chamber.
P0251 says that valve is not doing its job.

Why metering on the inlet rather than the outlet
Older systems built full pressure and dumped the excess back to tank through a rail-mounted valve. That works, but pressurising fuel only to release it wastes energy and heats the fuel.
Inlet metering avoids both. Most systems now use inlet metering as the primary control, with an outlet valve for fast fine adjustment where fitted.
The practical consequence: on an inlet-metered system, a stuck valve affects everything, because it is the main lever.
Circuit fault or mechanical fault
As with every solenoid code, the first question is whether the electrical side or the hydraulic side failed.

Log commanded rail pressure, actual rail pressure and metering valve duty together during a cold start and a pull under load.
The pattern that catches people out: valve duty pegged at maximum with pressure still low. That is not necessarily a bad valve — it is the ECU trying its hardest, which is what it would also do with a starved supply or leaking injectors.
Causes worth checking first
Contamination in the valve
The metering valve has fine clearances and sits in the fuel path. Debris from a degrading in-tank strainer, a filter left too long, or a fuel system that has been run on poor fuel all end up here.
A metering valve that sticks intermittently often responds to a filter change and clean fuel — not always, but often enough that it belongs first.

Low pressure supply
The recurring theme of diesel diagnosis. The metering valve cannot meter fuel it does not receive. A restricted filter, a collapsing hose or air in the system all produce a pressure shortfall that reads as a metering fault.
Electrical
Measure the solenoid resistance against specification, inspect the connector for diesel contamination, and check the harness for chafing.
The pump
A worn pump cannot build pressure regardless of metering. Diagnosed last, after everything above is clear.
Symptoms
- Hard starting, particularly hot.
- Power loss under load and limp mode on a climb: car loses power uphill.
- Rough running or a stall at idle.
- Occasionally over-pressure with a valve stuck open, which sets P0088 instead.
The intermittent version is the frustrating one: fine for a week, limp mode on one motorway journey, fine again after a restart. That behaviour points at sticking rather than failure, and sticking points at contamination.

What to record before booking work
- Freeze frame — RPM, load and temperature when it set.
- Commanded versus actual rail pressure across a cold start and a full-throttle pull in a high gear.
- Whether it is load-dependent. Load-dependent faults are supply faults far more often than pump faults.
- Every other stored code. P0087, P0088 or injector codes alongside change the interpretation entirely.

The expensive mistake
Replacing the high pressure pump for a P0251 without checking supply, filter and injector returns first. The pump is the most costly part in the chain and the least likely single cause.
Order of investigation, always: filter and supply → air → injector returns → metering valve → pump.
