P0191 to P0193: fuel rail pressure sensor circuit and performance
Before you conclude the fuel system cannot hold pressure, confirm that the thing measuring pressure is telling the truth. These codes are about the instrument.
Every pressure-related decision the ECU makes about the fuel system rests on one sensor threaded into the rail. If that sensor is wrong, everything downstream of it is wrong too — including the codes that appear to describe a mechanical problem.

Why this code comes before the expensive ones
P0087 says pressure is too low. P0191 says the sensor reporting pressure is not plausible.
If both appear, fix the sensor question first. A sensor reading low makes the ECU command more pressure than needed, or conclude the pump has failed when it has not. People buy pumps for this.
The reverse is also true: a sensor reading high makes the ECU reduce pressure, causing genuine driveability problems from a healthy fuel system.
The key-off test
The simplest and most decisive check, and it takes seconds.
With the ignition off and the engine cold and unpressurised, the rail pressure reading should be approximately zero, or atmospheric depending on how the vehicle reports it.

A rail cannot hold high pressure with the engine off for hours. A sensor claiming it does is the fault, and you have just eliminated the pump without touching a tool.
Causes
The sensor
Most common. These live on the rail in a high-temperature, high-vibration environment, and the sensing element drifts or fails outright.
Connector
Heat and vibration again. Check for spread pins and for oil contamination inside the connector body.
Shared 5 V reference
The sensor uses a reference voltage shared with other sensors. A short in one sensor drags the reference down and sets codes on several at once.
If you have rail pressure, MAP and pedal position codes together, look at the reference before assuming three sensors failed simultaneously.
Wiring
Chafing where the harness crosses the engine, particularly on engines that rock noticeably at idle.
Reading the pattern of codes
The combination present tells you a great deal:

What it feels like from the driver’s seat
- Hard starting, hot or cold.
- Power loss under load, sometimes limp mode.
- Rough running or a stall.
- Occasionally no symptom at all — the plausibility check caught it before the driver did.

Before replacing
- Key-off reading — the decisive test.
- Check for other sensor codes suggesting a shared reference fault.
- Inspect the connector for corrosion and oil.
- Compare cranking pressure against the specification for the engine.
- Replace with the correct part. Rail pressure sensors are not generic, and a wrong-range sensor produces plausible-looking nonsense.
- Confirm afterwards that commanded and actual pressure track each other.
If the sensor checks out and P0087 remains, the investigation moves to the fuel system proper: filter, air, injector returns, regulator, then pump — in that order: common rail injector diagnostics.
Pair an ELM327 adapter, open the free tier of the app and read rail pressure with the ignition on and the engine off. If that number is not near zero, you have found the fault before opening the bonnet.
