P0102 and P0103: MAF circuit low and high input
These two codes mean the MAF signal left its electrical window entirely. Unlike P0101 they point at wiring, connectors and power supply far more often than at the sensor itself.
P0102 and P0103 are the electrical siblings of P0101. Where P0101 says “this number is implausible”, these two say “this number is outside the range the circuit can physically produce”. That difference changes the entire diagnostic approach: you are now chasing volts, not airflow.
What each code means
- P0102 — circuit low input. Signal voltage or frequency below the valid floor. The ECU is seeing something close to zero airflow while the engine is clearly running.
- P0103 — circuit high input. Signal above the valid ceiling. The ECU is being told the engine is inhaling more than it possibly could.
Both put the engine into a substitute fuelling strategy. The car usually still drives, but poorly: flat throttle response, hesitation, sometimes limp mode.
Two sensor types, two signal shapes
Before probing anything, know which sensor you have.
Analogue (voltage output). Older Bosch HFM and most Japanese sensors. Signal is 0–5 V, roughly 0.5–1.0 V at idle rising to 4–4.5 V at wide open throttle.
Digital (frequency output). Common on Ford and some GM applications. Signal is a square wave, roughly 2–3 kHz at idle rising to 8–10 kHz. A voltmeter shows a meaningless average here — you need a scope or a meter with a frequency function.
Diagnosing a frequency sensor with a voltmeter is a classic way to condemn a good part.
Wiring: where these codes usually live
A five-minute inspection beats an hour of theory.
- Connector corrosion. The MAF sits in the airstream, often near the bonnet gap where water runs in. Green pins are extremely common and produce both codes intermittently.
- Chafed harness. The intake boot moves with the engine. Wires rubbing on the airbox lip eventually break through.
- Bad ground. A high-resistance sensor ground shifts the whole signal upwards and reads as P0103.
- Missing 12 V supply. Check the fuse before anything else — see fuses and relays basics. A blown MAF fuse gives a hard P0102 that no amount of sensor cleaning will fix.
- Rodent damage. Modern soy-based wire insulation is genuinely attractive to mice. Look for shredded loom near the airbox.
The test sequence
Step 1 — read live data. With the engine running, does MAF read a flat 0.00 g/s or a pinned maximum? A hard-stuck value at either extreme confirms an electrical fault rather than a metering error. Basics of getting there: reading live data.
Step 2 — wiggle test. Engine idling, watch the live value while gently moving the connector and the harness. A value that jumps or drops out has just told you exactly where the fault is. This is the single highest-yield test for intermittent versions of these codes, and it costs nothing.
Step 3 — back-probe power and ground. Ignition on, engine off. You want battery voltage on the supply pin and under 0.1 V drop on the ground pin. Anything else is a harness problem.
Step 4 — signal check. Only now is the sensor itself a suspect. Analogue: expect a smooth rise as you blip the throttle. Digital: expect frequency to climb proportionally.
Step 5 — substitution. If steps 2–4 are clean, the sensor is the remaining variable.
Why cheap sensors keep these codes alive
Counterfeit MAF sensors are one of the most heavily faked automotive parts. A copy with the wrong hot-wire calibration will often sit just outside the ECU’s accepted window and set P0103 within days. The same problem plagues fake adapters — see how to spot a fake ELM327 clone for the pattern.
