ESC/ESP — stability control off/faulty

What this indicator means

ESC/ESP uses steering angle, lateral acceleration, yaw gyro and wheel-speed sensors from the ABS block. During a slide the system selectively brakes individual wheels to bring the car back on trajectory. The indicator blinks during active intervention; steady illumination means fault or manual off (ESP OFF button).

Common causes

  • ESP OFF button pressed (check by the gear lever)
  • Wheel-speed sensor fault (same as ABS)
  • Steering-angle sensor out of calibration (often after steering repairs)
  • Yaw sensor issue
  • Low system voltage (below 11.5 V)
  • Seized valve in the ESP hydraulic block

What to do as a driver

Try toggling ESP off then on with the button. If the light does not clear, read C-codes with an adapter. After wheel or tie-rod changes, the steering angle sensor often needs calibration via a service scan tool.

Safety

Important: without ESP controllability in a slide drops significantly. Avoid ice and hard manoeuvres. Repair within days.
