Two-trip logic: why the lamp waits before it warns you
A fault detected once does not light the lamp. Understanding that delay explains why a problem can exist for days before you hear about it.
Sensors produce occasional anomalous readings. Fuel varies. Weather varies. A system that illuminated a warning lamp at the first unusual measurement would send drivers to workshops constantly for nothing.
Two-trip logic is the answer: most emissions faults must be detected on two consecutive drive cycles before the lamp comes on.

How a fault progresses
First detection. The monitor runs, finds the fault, and stores a pending code. No lamp. A freeze frame is captured.
Second detection, next drive cycle. The monitor runs again and finds the same fault. The code becomes confirmed, the lamp illuminates, and a permanent code is stored.
If the second run passes, the pending code is discarded. It was a one-off.

What counts as a drive cycle
Not simply starting the engine.
A drive cycle generally requires: a cold start, the engine reaching operating temperature, and enough varied driving for the relevant monitor to complete its test.
A short trip that never warms the engine may not count at all. That is why a fault can exist for days on a car used only for school runs, and why the lamp sometimes appears after a longer journey — the monitor finally got its opportunity.

The exceptions that skip the wait
Some faults are urgent enough to bypass the second trip.
Catalyst-damaging misfires illuminate the lamp immediately, and make it flash. Unburnt fuel reaching a hot converter can melt the substrate in minutes, so there is no waiting.

Fuel system faults also often confirm faster than EVAP or catalyst faults, which are slow by design.
How the lamp goes out again
The reverse logic, and it is slower.
Once the fault is fixed, the ECU needs to see the monitor pass — typically on three consecutive drive cycles — before extinguishing the lamp on its own.
Clearing codes turns the lamp off immediately and resets all readiness monitors, which has a cost: a vehicle with incomplete monitors fails an emissions test regardless of its actual condition.

The code memory is slower still. A confirmed code typically persists for around 40 warm-up cycles after the fault stops occurring: DTC aging and self-clearing codes.
Why this matters practically
After a repair
No lamp is not proof. Check for pending codes during the verification drive — a pending code means the fault is still happening and simply has not been confirmed yet.

When the lamp goes out by itself
This causes a great deal of confusion, and it has two explanations.
The fault genuinely stopped. A loose fuel cap tightened, an intermittent that has not recurred.
Conditions changed. Cold-weather faults that vanish in spring, or a fault only present under conditions you have not repeated.
Either way, the code is still stored, and reading it tells you what happened: why the check engine light comes back.

Readiness status combined with permanent codes reveals a recent clear. A seller who cleared codes in the car park leaves both fingerprints.

Scan monthly rather than waiting for the lamp: stored, pending, permanent, readiness. Two minutes.
Pending codes are next month’s problem written down today, and catching one is almost always cheaper than catching the confirmed version.

Read pending codes as a routine — an ELM327 adapter and the free tier of the app are all it takes. The lamp is a late warning by design; the pending list is the early one.
