OBD on trucks: SAE J1939, Volvo/Scania/DAF/MAN — standard and specifics
How to diagnose a truck via OBD: J1939 vs OBD-II, SPN/FMI codes, difference between light and heavy commercial vehicles, which adapters support J1939.
Light commercial vehicles (LCV) like Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter, Iveco Daily use standard OBD-II (SAE J1962, 16-pin). But heavy trucks (Volvo FH, Scania R, DAF XF, MAN TGX, Iveco S-Way) use a different standard — SAE J1939 with a 9-pin (Type I) or 6-pin (Type II) connector. SPN + FMI — how to read
SPN (Suspect Parameter Number) — the “parameter registered with a problem”. FMI (Failure Mode Identifier) — the fault character:
- FMI 0-1 — data valid but too high/low
- FMI 2 — data intermittent
- FMI 3-6 — voltage out of range or shorted
- FMI 7 — mechanical system not responding
- FMI 8-9 — abnormal frequency or duty cycle
- FMI 10 — abnormal rate of change
- FMI 11 — root cause unknown
- FMI 14 — special instructions
- FMI 31 — condition exists
Example: SPN 3251 FMI 5 = “DPF differential pressure: circuit failed low (open or short to ground)“

NOT stock ELM327 — you need an adapter with J1708 + J1939 support:

Budget option:
- DPA5 clone ($60-100) — Chinese, works for 80% of functions
Don’t buy a regular ELM327 for a truck — it won’t see anything.
Diagnostic specifics
DPF regeneration
On a truck DPF regen is manually controlled via service tool:
- Passive: during normal driving 700+ RPM on the highway 30+ min
- Active: extra fuel into exhaust (automatic on warm engine)
- Stationary (Parked/Manual): via service adapter, driver parks 30-45 min in a safe spot, presses a button — engine raises RPM to 1200-1500, temp 650°C
This stationary regen is unique to trucks and NOT available on cars.
AdBlue (DEF) on trucks
All like cars but:
- Tank 25-80 liters (vs 12-20 on cars)
- AdBlue filter change scheduled (60k km)
- “No-drive” regulations stricter — after 5 start cycles with empty tank the engine limits to 12 mph (vs full lockout on cars)
Air compressor and retarder
Trucks have:
- Air compressor (pneumatic brakes) — SPN 46, 108
- Retarder (electromagnetic brake) — SPN 1483
