Summer heat: why cars overheat in traffic specifically, and what to do beforehand
Cooling systems are designed with margin, but that margin is eaten away over years: a clogged radiator, old coolant, a fan that engages late. What to check in May so you are not on the hard shoulder in July.
Cooling systems are engineered with generous margin — to work in heat, in traffic, with the air conditioning on and a full car. The problem is that the margin is consumed gradually, and nothing signals it until it runs out.
So overheating prevention is not a repair but restoring the margin before you need it.
Why in traffic specifically
The logic is simple. Moving, the radiator receives airflow, and that is enough even with partly blocked fins. In traffic, air movement comes only from the fan.
Plus the air conditioning: its condenser sits in front of the engine radiator and heats the air that then passes through it. Which is why overheating usually arrives in the “traffic + heat + air conditioning” scenario.

What to check in live data
The fan switch-on point
The most important check of the season. Warm the engine at idle with the air conditioning on and watch the temperature.
The fan should engage at roughly 212–220 °F (first speed) and stop the temperature going past 220–226.

Real temperature, not the needle
On many cars the needle is damped and sits centred from 185 to 230 °F. The difference between 203 and 225 is invisible on the gauge, and that is the difference between normal and the start of trouble.
Warm-up rate
An unusually fast climb to operating temperature on a cold engine means low coolant or weak circulation.
What to check by hand
The radiator from outside. Over the years a layer of seeds, insects, and leaves packs between the engine radiator and the air conditioning condenser. Rinse gently from the engine side outwards, never the reverse, or the debris packs deeper.
Coolant. Not just the level but its age. Additives are consumed in 3–5 years, and old fluid transfers heat worse and starts attacking aluminium.
Hoses. Swelling, cracks near clamps, softness. A hose that will burst in the heat is usually visible in advance.
The expansion tank cap. A cheap part almost nobody replaces. It holds system pressure — and pressure raises the boiling point by roughly 35 °F. A failed cap means boiling at 212 instead of 250.
The pump belt. Slipping means circulation weakens exactly when it is needed most.
Air conditioning: both victim and culprit
Here the air conditioning plays both roles.
As culprit: it adds heat load to the radiator. In summer traffic, the difference between air conditioning on and off is several degrees of engine temperature.
As victim: when the engine overheats, the control module’s first action is to switch the compressor off to shed load. So “the air conditioning switches itself off in the heat” is not an air conditioning fault but an overheating signal.

What else rises in summer
- Detonation. Hot intake air and a hot engine make detonation more likely. The module pulls timing, power drops, consumption rises. Mechanics in the knock sensor guide.
- Battery stress. Heat dries the electrolyte and shortens life no less than cold does.
- Tyre pressure. Rises with heat; measure on cold tyres in the morning.
One weekend’s sequence
- Rinse the radiator from outside.
- Check coolant age and level.
- Inspect hoses and replace the tank cap if it is over five years old.
- Verify the fan switch-on point in live data.

- Overheating in traffic means the fan and a clogged radiator; on the highway, the thermostat and pump.
