Heated seats: why they stop working and what to do
The heating element breaks from flexing rather than from age. The causes, the repair, and why not to ignore it.
Heated seats are a feature noticed only in winter and only once they stop working. The causes are predictable, and the repair depends on where exactly the break occurred.
How it works
A heating element — fine wire or carbon tape sewn into the cushion and backrest.
A temperature sensor — it limits the heat to prevent overheating.
A control module — the switch, a relay, or a dedicated unit.
A connector under the seat — and that is the culprit more often than expected.
Typical causes
A broken element. The wire fatigues from constant flexing — which is why it usually breaks in the cushion near the side bolster, where the driver leans when getting in.
The main cause of that wear: sliding into the seat sideways and shifting weight across the cushion rather than sitting down onto it. The wire is then worked in bending.
The connector under the seat. The seat moves and the harness flexes; plus water off footwear ends up under the seat.
The switch — contact or backlight.
The temperature sensor — when it fails the module may refuse to switch the heating on at all (that is protection).
The fuse — heated seats draw a lot and have their own protected circuit; covered in the fuses article.
Narrowing it down
One seat does not heat — that seat’s element, connector, or switch.
Neither seat heats — the fuse, relay, or module.
The backrest heats but the cushion does not (or the reverse) — those are two separate elements; the specific one is found.
It heats and cuts out in seconds — the temperature sensor or a poor contact that heats and opens.
It cuts out when the seat is moved — the connector or harness.
The repair
A broken element is repairable — but the upholstery has to come off and the break located. Fiddly work, cheap part.
Repair kits with a new element exist and are fitted in place of the old one.
Replacing the upholstery with its element is dearer but faster.
An essential condition: before removing a seat on a modern car, isolate the electrics and wait for the system to discharge. Safety system connectors run under the seat — the occupancy sensor and sometimes a side airbag. Disconnecting live produces an SRS code, and sometimes worse; covered in the belts and airbags article.
Why not to ignore it
A damaged element can overheat locally at a partial break. That is rare, but it is why “it heats in patches” is not a cosmetic symptom.
An arcing connector under a seat sits alongside safety system connectors.
What diagnostics shows
Comfort module codes — the heating circuit, switch, and sensor.
SRS codes — if a connector under the seat was disturbed; the most common consequence of removing a seat yourself.
Voltage — during a sag the heating may be inhibited; covered in the alternator article.
In short
- The element breaks in the cushion from sliding in, not from age.
- Backrest and cushion are separate elements; that narrows the search at once.
- Cutting out when the seat moves means the connector or harness underneath.
- Isolate the electrics before removing a seat: safety connectors live under it.
- “Heats in patches” is a partial break, not a cosmetic issue.
