Roof bars: fitting, limits, and what changes on a journey
Roof bars change aerodynamics, centre of gravity, and the load the body carries. Fitting, limits, and the real consequences.
Roof bars look like a simple accessory. In fact they change three things at once: aerodynamics, centre of gravity, and the load the body carries.
Load limits
The permitted roof load is far lower than people assume — it is stated in the vehicle handbook.
Important: that figure includes the weight of the bars and box themselves, not only the cargo. An empty box already uses part of the allowance.
More important still: the limit applies while moving. Under hard braking and over bumps, dynamic loads far exceed static ones.
Fitting
Only at the factory mounting points — rails, factory apertures, or model-specific feet. Universal door-clamp fittings need particular care.
Torque per the rack’s instructions; over-tightening distorts a rail and under-tightening allows movement at speed.
Recheck after the first few miles — the fittings settle.
Check at every stop on a long journey.
Symmetry — the bars should be parallel and evenly spaced; a skewed pair whistles and loads unevenly.
What changes on a journey
Aerodynamics. This applies even with empty bars: consumption rises noticeably, and more so at motorway speed; covered in the fuel economy article.
Noise. Whistling at speed is a normal characteristic; partly cured by fairings and correct profile orientation.
The centre of gravity rises: the car behaves differently in corners and crosswinds. With a box it is noticeable.
Braking distances grow with the weight.
Height. The most forgotten item: car parks, barriers, branches. Note the total height with the box and keep the figure in mind.
Boxes and securing loads
Cargo inside the box must be secured too — under braking it slides forward and loads the mountings.
Heavy items towards the centre of the box, not in the nose.
Long items (ladders, boards) — secured front and rear, not only in the middle.
Straps, not bungees — bungees stretch at speed.
Remove them when not needed. The main advice: empty bars all year mean fuel consumption and noise for no benefit.
What to check on the road
- The mountings — at every stop.
- Strap condition — they chafe.
- Box locks — closed at every point.
- The height — before entering a car park.
- The speed limit for that specific rack, where stated.
