Rain sensing wipers not reacting: the sensor lives on the glass
The sensor does not see rain. It measures how light reflects inside the windscreen, which explains almost everything about how it fails.
A rain sensor does not detect water directly. It shines infrared light into the windscreen at an angle and measures how much reflects back.
Dry glass reflects almost all of it. Water on the outside changes the boundary and lets some escape, so less returns. Less reflection means more water.

Why the bond to the glass matters
The sensor must be optically coupled to the windscreen through a clear gel pad. Any air gap between sensor and glass ruins the measurement.
This is the single most common cause of a rain sensor that stopped working: a windscreen replacement where the pad was reused, or where a bubble was left underneath.
If the fault appeared after glass work, that is the explanation and it is not a sensor failure.

The other causes, all optical
Something on the glass in the sensor area
The sensor looks at a small patch of windscreen. Anything on it changes the reading:
- Traffic film, tree sap or a poorly cleaned area.
- Water repellent coatings, which are the most surprising cause. A coating that makes water bead disperses droplets differently, and the sensor may not see them at all.
- Stickers, permits or toll tags placed over the sensor area.
- A dashcam or mount in the wrong position.
Clean the outside of the glass in front of the sensor properly, before anything else.
A chip or crack in the sensor area
Damage to the glass in exactly that patch scatters light and confuses the sensor. It is also a reason to have a chip in that area repaired promptly.
Worn wiper blades
A blade that smears rather than clears leaves a film. The sensor sees residual water, keeps wiping, and the smearing gets worse.
Replace blades before diagnosing a sensor. Cheap, and it resolves a fair share of “the wipers behave oddly” complaints.
The connector
At the top of the windscreen, disturbed by any headliner or mirror work.
The module
Rain and light sensing usually share a module. If automatic headlights also stopped working, the shared module or its connector is the cause — which narrows it considerably: automatic headlights not working.
Behaviour that is not a fault
Sensitivity is adjustable on most vehicles, usually via the stalk. If the wipers work but not as often as you want, that is the setting.
Light drizzle may not trigger it at low sensitivity, by design.
Automatic wipers usually operate when the car is stationary too, which some owners find unexpected.

Wipers that do not work at all
A different problem, and worth distinguishing.
If the wipers do nothing in any mode, including manual, the fault is in the wiper system rather than the sensor: motor, relay, fuse, or the stalk switch.

Rain sensing affects only the automatic mode. Manual modes bypass it entirely.
The safety consideration
Automatic wipers create the habit of not thinking about visibility. When they fail, it fails at the moment rain starts — which is exactly when visibility matters.
Until it is fixed, use manual mode deliberately rather than waiting to notice.
Where to start
- Clean the glass thoroughly in the sensor area, outside and inside.
- Check for anything covering the sensor patch.
- Check for water repellent coating — remove it from that area if present.
- Replace worn wiper blades.
- Ask whether the windscreen was replaced recently.
- Check whether automatic lights also failed — a shared module.
- Check the sensitivity setting before assuming a fault.
