P2016 and P2017: intake manifold runner position sensor
The feedback half of the intake flap system. Without it the ECU is commanding flaps blind, and it will not do that for long.
Intake manifold runner flaps need position feedback for the same reason every other actuated component does: the ECU must confirm that what it commanded actually happened.

Circuit versus performance
P2016 and P2017 are electrical. Voltage outside the plausible window — a short, an open, or a shorted reference.
P2015 is behavioural. The voltage is plausible but the movement does not match the command. That is carbon or a broken linkage rather than a sensor.
This distinction directs the work, and it is the reason to read the exact code rather than “an intake flap fault”.
What a healthy signal looks like
Most position sensors here are potentiometric — a wiper on a track, powered by the 5 V reference.

Neither extreme is ever reached in normal operation. A design that read 0 V at one end could not distinguish “closed” from “broken wire”, so the working range sits inside the limits deliberately.
A reading of exactly 0 V or 5 V is therefore a circuit fault, not a flap position.
Causes
The connector
First. It sits on a hot engine, often in the valley or on top of the manifold, and it collects debris and heat.
The shared 5 V reference
One shorted sensor pulls down the reference used by others. If P2016 arrives with MAP, throttle and pedal codes together, diagnose the reference rather than four sensors.
Wiring
Chafing across the manifold or against a bracket.
The sensor
On most engines the sensor is integrated into the actuator assembly and not separately replaceable. That raises the cost and is worth establishing before ordering anything.
A broken linkage
The plastic lever arm that connects actuator to flap shaft breaks on several engine families. When it does, the sensor may still read the actuator’s position while the flaps are not moving at all — which produces a performance code rather than a circuit code, but is worth checking here too.
Inspect the linkage physically on any high-mileage engine with these codes. A broken flap drawn into a cylinder is the failure nobody wants.
The confirming test
Log commanded position, actual position and intake air mass through a drive.

Once the sensor reports plausibly and tracks command, the investigation moves to flow and carbon.
Symptoms
- Rough idle, especially on a diesel.
- Reduced power at low RPM.
- Increased smoke.
- Limp mode on some vehicles.
- Sometimes nothing noticeable, with the lamp as the only sign.
The whole-tract view
If you are removing the intake manifold to reach the sensor or actuator, do the rest while it is off. On a high-mileage diesel the same carbon that caused this fault is also in:
- The EGR valve and its passages: P0400 and P0403 EGR flow.
- The intake ports.
- On direct injection petrol engines, the intake valves.
Doing that job twice is the expensive outcome.
Step by step
- Read the exact code — circuit or performance.
- Check for other sensor codes suggesting a shared reference fault.
- Inspect the connector.
- Log commanded versus actual position with airflow.
- Inspect the linkage physically.
- Plan the whole intake tract if the manifold is coming off.
