P0745 to P0747: pressure control solenoid A faults
Line pressure decides whether a clutch holds or slips. This solenoid sets it, and it is dramatically cheaper than the rebuild people are quoted instead.
Everything an automatic gearbox does mechanically comes down to hydraulic pressure applying clutches. Too little pressure and clutches slip; too much and shifts become violent. The pressure control solenoid is what sets it.

Why this code matters commercially
A slipping automatic is often quoted as a rebuild. Sometimes that is correct.
But a pressure control solenoid produces identical symptoms and costs a fraction of the price. It is a genuinely common failure, and it is the thing to eliminate before agreeing to anything expensive.
The same applies to the valve body, which can often be replaced or reconditioned as a unit without opening the gearbox proper.
What each code means
P0746: stuck off, or low pressure
The solenoid cannot deliver commanded pressure. Symptoms:
- Slipping under load, particularly uphill or when accelerating hard.
- Soft, mushy shifts that seem to take too long.
- Delayed engagement when selecting Drive or Reverse.
- Codes for incorrect gear ratio, because clutches are not holding: P0731 to P0736 incorrect gear ratio.
P0747: stuck on, or high pressure
The opposite. Symptoms:
- Harsh, banging shifts.
- A clunk when engaging Drive: clunk when shifting into drive.
- Shifts that arrive earlier than expected.
Sustained high pressure damages clutch material through shock loading, so this is not the benign version.
P0745: general circuit
Electrical, or a fault the module cannot classify further.
Causes, cheapest first
Fluid condition
Genuinely the first thing. Solenoids have fine internal clearances and small filter screens. Degraded fluid carrying clutch material and varnish blocks them.
A solenoid that sticks intermittently often responds to a fluid and filter service — not always, but often enough that it belongs first.
Burnt fluid is also its own finding: it means clutches have been slipping and generating heat: automatic transmission ATF diagnostics and automatic transmission fluid myths.
Fluid level
Low fluid means the pump draws air, and air is compressible. Pressure collapses under load and recovers when demand drops — which produces exactly the intermittent slip pattern.
On most modern gearboxes the level is set at a specified fluid temperature: P0710 to P0713 transmission fluid temperature sensor.
The solenoid itself
Electrical failure — an open or shorted winding — or mechanical sticking. Resistance can be measured against specification, and many are accessible with the pan removed.
The internal harness
The wiring inside the gearbox passes through a sealed case connector. When that seal hardens, fluid wicks along the wires toward the module.

The valve body
Bore wear causes internal leakage. Pressure is generated and lost before it reaches the clutch.
The pump
Last, and least common.
The data that separates cheap from expensive
Log commanded line pressure against actual line pressure, where the vehicle exposes both, plus engine RPM and vehicle speed.

That last row is important: maximum duty with insufficient pressure means the solenoid is being commanded correctly and the hydraulic circuit cannot deliver. That points at the valve body or the pump rather than the solenoid.

Adaptation reset
After any solenoid or valve body work, the gearbox needs its adaptations reset. Without that it continues compensating for a fault that no longer exists, and the shift quality stays poor.

Step by step
- Check fluid level and condition at the correct temperature.
- Read all transmission codes from the transmission module.
- Log commanded versus actual line pressure under load.
- Test solenoid resistance if the pan is accessible.
- Consider a valve body before a rebuild.
- Reset adaptations after the repair and verify shift quality.
Log engine RPM against vehicle speed under a hard acceleration — an ELM327 adapter and the free tier of the app are all it takes. Flare between gears, captured on a graph, is what turns a vague complaint into a specific one.
