P0705: transmission range sensor and the car that starts in any gear
The range sensor tells the car which gear you selected. When it fails, the symptoms range from a reverse light that never works to an engine that will start in Drive.
P0705 “Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction” is a code with a genuine safety dimension, which is unusual for a transmission fault. The range sensor — also called the inhibitor switch, neutral safety switch or PRNDL switch — tells the rest of the car which position the selector is in.
Several systems depend on that single piece of information, and when it becomes unreliable the consequences are not confined to gear selection.
What depends on knowing the gear
- Starter inhibit. The engine should only crank in Park or Neutral.
- Reverse lights and reversing camera.
- Shift strategy. The TCM chooses its shift map based on selected range.
- Parking sensors and some driver assistance that activate on reverse.
- Instrument display of the selected gear.
That first item is why this code matters. A failed range sensor can allow the engine to crank while the transmission is in Drive. A car that lurches forward when the key is turned is a genuine hazard, and it is the reason the sensor is also called the neutral safety switch.
Recognisable symptoms

The “cranks in any position” case deserves emphasis. If your car will start in Drive, treat it as unroadworthy until it is fixed.
How the sensor works, and why it drifts
Most range sensors are a multi-position switch driven by the selector shaft. Different positions close different combinations of contacts, and the TCM decodes the pattern. Some newer designs use a magnetic or Hall-effect arrangement instead.
Failure modes follow from that construction:
Wear of the contacts. Decades of selector movement wear the internal contact surfaces. The sensor starts producing invalid combinations, especially in the positions used most.
Misadjustment. The sensor mounts with slotted holes and must be aligned to the selector shaft. A gearbox that has been removed and refitted, or linkage that has been disturbed, frequently comes back slightly out of position. This is a free fix if you catch it — adjustment, not replacement.
Water and corrosion. External mounting on the gearbox case means road spray. The connector suffers first.
Linkage stretch. The cable or rod between the lever and the gearbox stretches or the bushes perish. The lever says Drive, the shaft is between positions, and the sensor faithfully reports the nonsense it sees. Check the linkage before condemning the sensor.
Diagnosing it
1. Watch selector position in live data while a helper moves the lever slowly through every position. Each position should report cleanly, with a crisp transition. Positions that flicker, skip or overlap identify the fault immediately.
2. Check adjustment. Compare lever detent positions against the sensor. In Neutral the shaft should sit centrally within the sensor’s neutral window, not at its edge.
3. Test the circuit. Continuity across the appropriate pins in each position, per the wiring diagram.
4. Inspect the linkage for slop, stretched cable and perished bushes.
Because this code usually lives in the TCM, you may see only P0700 on a basic tool. Reading the transmission module directly is what surfaces P0705.

If the transmission is also unhappy about ratios or speeds, the picture may be wider than the range sensor:
A TCM that has lost communication produces symptoms very similar to a range sensor fault, so confirm the module is talking before buying parts.
Cost expectations
- Adjustment only: often a workshop hour, sometimes free.
- Range sensor: $60–250 for the part.
- Selector cable or linkage bushes: $30–200.
- Labour: highly variable, since some sensors need the gearbox partly dropped.
After the repair
Verify the safety function directly: the engine must not crank in Drive or Reverse. Then check reverse lights, dash display and shift behaviour through a full drive. Clear codes from both modules and confirm nothing returns.
