OBD-II Modes 03 and 04: reading and clearing codes correctly
One mode reads confirmed codes, the other erases far more than most people realise. Knowing exactly what Mode 04 destroys is what stops you clearing away your own evidence.
These two modes are what most people mean when they say “I plugged in a code reader”. They look symmetrical — one reads, one clears — but they are not remotely equal in consequence.
Mode 03: show stored codes
Mode 03 returns confirmed diagnostic trouble codes: faults that have failed their test enough times for the ECU to commit, which for most emissions monitors means two consecutive failed trips.
These are the codes that light the dashboard.
It is worth knowing what Mode 03 does not return:
- Pending codes — faults on their first strike, no light yet. Those live in Mode 07.
- Permanent codes — confirmed codes that cannot be cleared with a tool. Those live in Mode 0A.
- Manufacturer-specific codes in modules outside the powertrain — ABS, airbags, body. Those need enhanced access, as covered in scan tool limits.
So “no codes found” from a basic reader can coexist with a genuine developing fault. Check Mode 07 as well — pending vs stored codes.
Mode 0A: the codes you cannot clear
Permanent codes exist specifically to stop people clearing a fault, driving to an inspection, and passing before the monitors notice again.
A permanent code clears only when the ECU has run the relevant monitor and passed it. No tool can erase one. If you have a permanent code, the only route is to actually fix the fault and then complete the drive cycle — OBD drive cycle.
This is a genuinely good feature, and it is why “just clear it before the test” stopped working on newer cars.
Mode 04: clear codes — and much else
Here is the part worth reading twice. Mode 04 is not “turn the light off”. The standard defines it as clearing emissions-related diagnostic information, which means:
- All stored and pending codes.
- The freeze frame — the snapshot of conditions when the fault occurred.
- Readiness monitor status, reset to not-ready across the board.
- Mode 06 test results.
- Oxygen sensor test results.
- On many vehicles, learned fuel adaptations.
That list is why clearing casually is expensive. You are not switching off a lamp; you are deleting the entire evidence file.
The freeze frame in particular is often the most useful single piece of information available — freeze frame data explained and freeze frame or live data.
The correct order of operations
- Mode 03 — read stored codes. Write them down.
- Mode 07 — read pending codes.
- Mode 02 — read the freeze frame for each code. Photograph it.
- Mode 06 — note anything approaching its threshold.
- Diagnose and repair.
- Mode 04 — clear, once.
- Drive a full cycle.
- Mode 07 and readiness — confirm nothing pending and monitors complete.

Consequences people do not expect
Readiness resets mean a failed emissions test. Clear on Monday, test on Tuesday, fail on “not ready” — the trap described in OBD codes and the emissions test and P1000.
Lost adaptations cause a temporarily rough idle. The ECU relearns over the next few dozen miles. Alarming if you were not expecting it, and harmless.
Battery disconnection does the same thing. People who avoid Mode 04 and then disconnect the battery have achieved exactly the same result.
When clearing is the right call
It is a legitimate tool, used deliberately:
- After a repair, to establish whether the fault returns.
- After buying a used car, once you have recorded everything — the first OBD scan after buying.
- To confirm a fault is intermittent rather than continuous. A code that returns instantly is a hard fault; one that takes two days is a two-trip code.

When it is the wrong call
- Before an emissions test.
- Before understanding the code and its freeze frame.
- Repeatedly, hoping the fault goes away. It does not, and each clear costs you a freeze frame.
- On a car you are selling, to conceal a fault. The readiness monitors give this away immediately to any buyer who checks.
What Mode 04 cannot reach
Clearing powertrain codes does nothing for ABS, airbag or body-module faults, which have their own memories and often need manufacturer-level tools. An illuminated airbag light will not go out because you cleared engine codes — airbag light on causes and B1000 body codes.
