Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson OBD-II Diagnostics: 1.6 GDI, 2.0 CRDi, DCT, TPMS
DTC codes for Kia Sportage QL/NQ5 and Hyundai Tucson TL/NX4: 1.6 GDI carbon P2187, 2.0 CRDi D4HA EGR P0401, 7-speed DCT P0894, TPMS C0051 — OBD-II without dealer Gen3 scanner.
Kia Sportage and Hyundai Tucson are among the most popular Korean SUVs in Europe. The third and fourth generations (Sportage QL/NQ5, Tucson TL/NX4) with 1.6 GDI, 2.0 CRDi, and 1.6 T-GDI have characteristic faults that diagnose well via OBD-II.
1.6 GDI (Sportage QL, Tucson TL): Direct Injection Without Turbo
P2187 — Lean Mixture from Valve Carbon
1.6 GDI Gamma — direct injection without port injectors → highest risk of valve carbon deposits among Kia/Hyundai engines.
Symptoms:
STFT B1> +8% at idle (especially on cold engine)- Rough idle after 80,000 km
- P2187 — especially on short-trip driving
Live Data:
STFT B1at 800 RPM: if > +10% and decreases at 2,500 RPM → valve carbon (not a leak)LTFT B1> +7% persistently → carbon has already accumulated
Solution: Walnut Blasting or chemical decarbonisation after 80,000 km.
P0340 — Camshaft Position Sensor: 1.6 GDI Chain
1.6 GDI Gamma also has a characteristic timing chain issue with poor oil:
Camshaft Signal Quality: intermittent on cold start- Metallic rattle (similar to VW EA111)
1.6 T-GDI (Sportage NQ5, Tucson NX4): Turbocharged GDI
P0299 — Underboost 1.6 T-GDI
1.6 T-GDI Smartstream G1.6T — newer engine (2021+):
- Intercooler hose leak on early NQ5
- Turbo actuator failure after 60,000 km

P2187 T-GDI
1.6 T-GDI is also direct injection only on most versions (exception: Tucson NX4 from some markets with port+direct):

2.0 CRDi D4HA (Sportage QL, Tucson TL): Diesel
P0401 — EGR 2.0 CRDi
Most common D4HA code after 80,000 km:
- Carbon in EGR valve and EGR cooler
EGR Valve Position vs Command: difference > 10% → valve stuck
Symptoms:
- Black smoke on acceleration after long warm-up
- Rough idle
P0087 — Rail Pressure D4HA
2.0 CRDi after 120,000 km:
- Bosch CP3 or CP4 pump — plunger wear
Rail Pressure Actualat idle: normal 200–280 bar; lower → pump- Clogged fuel filter (mandatory replacement every 30,000 km)
P2002 — DPF Efficiency
D4HA CRDi with DPF:
- Short city trips →
DPF Soot Massaccumulates DPF Differential Pressure> 12 kPa at 60 km/h → forced regeneration needed
7-Speed DCT (Sportage NQ5, Tucson NX4)
New 7-speed DCT (Hyundai/Kia Power Shift) — dry dual-clutch:
P0894 — DCT Clutch Slip
- Similar issue to VW DQ200 — overheating in traffic
Clutch 1/2 Temperature> 150°C → DCT limits torque
P0894 and DCT Adaptation
Kia/Hyundai DCT needs adaptation after traffic jams or clutch slip events:
DCT Adaptation Progress %: below 80% → adaptation required (service function via GDS or KIA-compatible scanner)
TPMS: Kia/Hyundai Tyre Pressure Sensors
C0051–C0054 — TPMS Sensor Missing
