Jeep and Chrysler Common OBD-II Codes: Cherokee, Renegade, Wrangler
Top DTC codes for Jeep Cherokee, Renegade, Wrangler and Chrysler: P0305 MultiAir misfires, P0522 oil pressure, U0100 CAN bus — OBD-II diagnostics guide.
Jeep and Chrysler are part of the Stellantis group (formerly FCA). Cherokee, Renegade, and Wrangler have distinctive American-Italian diagnostic characteristics, related to MultiAir and Pentastar technologies.
Pentastar V6 3.6L (Jeep Cherokee, Wrangler): Most Common Codes
The Pentastar 3.6L (ERB) is the primary engine in Cherokee KL/KK, Wrangler JK/JL, and Grand Cherokee WK2.
P0305 / P0302 — Misfires
Pentastar specifics:
- Pentastar 3.6L Gen 1 (2011–2015) has a known defect — carbon buildup on valves from a faulty oil separator ring in cylinder 3 → misfires specifically in cylinder #3
- Post-2016 engines were revised — much less common
Live Data:
Misfire Count Cyl 3— pay attention to cylinder 3 specificallyFuel Trim B2— if significantly different from B1 → uneven combustion between banks
P0522 / P0524 — Oil Pressure Sensor: Signal Too Low
Common on Pentastar at 75,000+ miles.
Causes:
- Worn oil pressure sensor (OPS) — cheap replacement part
- Actual low oil pressure — from oil pump wear or worn bearings
Check:
- Live Data →
Engine Oil Pressureat warm idle: normal 25–40 PSI (Pentastar) - Below 15 PSI → stop engine and diagnose cause
- If pressure normal but code present → replace OPS sensor
MultiAir 1.4T (Jeep Renegade, Compass): Specific Problems
MultiAir 1.4T (55260384, 55282073) — Fiat-developed engine, fitted to Renegade BU and Compass MP.
P0016 — CKP/CMP Synchronization Failure
MultiAir specifics: The MultiAir system controls intake valves directly via hydraulics (no intake camshaft). Synchronization failure can mean:
- Damaged MultiAir mechanism (electro-hydraulic actuator)
- Worn timing chain (critical on 1.4T after 60,000 miles)
WARNING: The Fiat MultiAir 1.4T timing chain is one of the most notorious weak points of the Renegade. Replacement before 50,000 miles is recommended by many mechanics as a preventive measure.
P0171 — Lean Mixture (1.4T MultiAir)
- Dirty MAF or air leak after MAF
- Clogged or faulty fuel injector
- Intake manifold foam degradation (production defect in some batches)
U0100 / U0101 — Lost Communication with ECM / TCM (CAN Bus)
Jeep and Chrysler are notorious for complex CAN networks. U-codes are very common after any repair.
Causes:
- Poorly connected or forgotten connector after repair
- Low battery voltage (< 11V) → CAN modules drop off
- Damaged CAN bus wiring (rare)
Check:
- Verify battery voltage → if < 12.4V with engine off → charge or replace
- Check all connectors after repair (often forgotten TIPM or SCCM connector)
- Live Data → check ECU list — all should be present (ECM, TCM, ABS, BCM, HVAC, TCM)
TIPM (Totally Integrated Power Module): FCA-Specific Problem
TIPM is the fuse and relay centre integrated with ECU functions. Classic problem on Grand Cherokee WK2 and Wrangler JK (2007–2014).
Symptoms of failed TIPM:
- Starter won’t engage (battery fine)
- Fuel pump doesn’t prime
- ABS/ESC triggers without cause
Related codes:
- U0415 — TIPM: incorrect data
- U0140 — Lost communication with BCM
- P0685 — ECM Power Control relay: failure
4WD: Selec-Terrain and Rock-Trac Codes
Jeep Cherokee and Wrangler have complex 4WD systems.
| Code | Description |
|---|---|
| C1218 | 2H/4H switching: error |
| C1200 | AWC/4WD controller: communication failure |
| P0826 | Selec-Terrain: incorrect signal |
4WD Live Data:
Transfer Case Mode— 2WD / Part-Time 4WD / 4LOFront Axle Status— Engaged / Disengaged
VM Motori 3.0 CRD Diesel (Grand Cherokee):
Grand Cherokee WK2 with VM Motori 3.0 CRD diesel (EXL):
| Code | Description |
|---|---|
| P0087 | Fuel rail pressure: below threshold |
| P2002 | DPF: efficiency below threshold |
| P20EE | SCR NOx: efficiency below threshold |
| P0193 | Rail pressure sensor: incorrect response |
VM 3.0 CRD weak point: Injection pump pressure regulator — contaminated diesel after 75,000 miles causes P0087.
Summary Table
| Model | Engine | Top Codes |
|---|---|---|
| Cherokee KL | Pentastar 3.6 | P0305 misfire, P0522 |
| Renegade BU | 1.4T MultiAir | P0016 chain, P0171 |
| Wrangler JK | Pentastar 3.6 | TIPM, P0302 cyl.3 |
| Grand Cherokee WK2 | 3.0 CRD | P0087 HPFP, P2002 DPF |
Jeep and Chrysler require attention to:
- Battery condition (CAN network vulnerable to low voltage)
- TIPM on older models
- Timing chain on Renegade 1.4T
Car Diagnostics supports full FCA EOBD protocol for Jeep and Chrysler models.
