Three wireless technologies
1. WiFi (ELM327 WiFi)
- How it works: adapter broadcasts its own WiFi network (e.g.
WiFi_OBDII), phone connects like to a regular router. Standard ELM327 protocol over TCP port 35000. - Speed: ~10-25 commands/sec
- Pros: the only one that works on both iPhone and Android; simple setup (no pairing PIN)
- Cons: phone loses internet while in use (WiFi is occupied by the adapter); doesn’t work on LTE-only; multiple phones can’t connect at once
- Price: $12-30
- Best for: iPhone drivers on old iOS, DIY mechanics with a separate tablet
2. Bluetooth Classic (SPP)
- How it works: classic Bluetooth 2.0 profile Serial Port Profile (SPP). PIN pairing (usually
1234or0000), then a virtual COM port. - Speed: 20-50 commands/sec (fastest)
- Pros: fastest, phone internet stays alive, supports streaming
- Cons: NOT supported on iPhone / iPad (Apple doesn’t allow SPP without MFi certification); sometimes conflicts with other Bluetooth devices
- Price: $10-25
- Best for: Android drivers, pro shops (speed matters for streaming logs)
3. Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE)
- How it works: Bluetooth 4.0+ Low Energy profile. No PIN pairing (just “scans and connects”). Specialised GATT characteristics.
- Speed: 5-15 commands/sec (slowest)
- Pros: works on both iPhone and Android, near-zero battery draw, no conflicts
