TC/TCS — traction control

The amber TC (Traction Control), TCS or ASR icon warns about a fault in the system that prevents driven-wheel spin. On a slippery or gravel start, wheels can lose grip.

What this indicator means

TC/TCS receives signals from ABS wheel-speed sensors. If driven wheels spin significantly faster than driven ones, the ECU reduces engine torque (via throttle angle or ignition cut) or brakes the spinning wheel. TCS is a "little brother" of ESC: it does not correct a slide, only manages traction.

Common causes

  • TC OFF button pressed (often combined with ESP OFF)
  • Wheel-speed sensor fault (same as ABS)
  • Different wheel sizes or unevenly worn tyres on the same axle
  • CAN-bus issue between ABS and engine ECU
  • After a wheel change — no adaptation performed

What to do as a driver

Verify TC OFF is not toggled. Inspect tyre wear — TCS "misbehaves" when pairs on the same axle have different tread depth. Read C-codes with an adapter.

Safety

Important: without TCS risk of wheelspin and control loss on slippery surfaces. Avoid hard accelerations.
