Reduced engine power (limp mode)
The "Reduced Power" or "Engine Power Reduced" icon means the ECU has dropped the engine into limp mode. Power is capped, rpm will not go above 3000–4000, A/C may be disabled — all to avoid damage.
What this indicator means
Limp mode is a defensive ECU strategy on detecting a critical parameter deviation: overheat, abnormal pressure, sensor failure that cannot be ignored. The engine keeps running but with restrictions, so the driver can reach a workshop without total drivetrain destruction.
Common causes
- Engine or transmission overheat
- MAF or MAP sensor fault (abnormal signal)
- Turbo fault (boost pressure out of range)
- Emergency oil pressure
- Multiple simultaneous misfires
- Timing chain issue (phase jump)
What to do as a driver
Immediately read the DTC — it identifies the cause precisely. Try stopping, killing ignition for 30 seconds, then restart. Limp mode clears in 30% of cases if the cause was transient. If it recurs, do not continue — call a tow.
Safety
Important/critical: continued driving is allowed but only very cautiously to the nearest workshop. The cause may be critical (overheat, pressure).
