Oil temperature — exceeded
The amber oil-can-with-thermometer icon fires when engine oil temperature rises above the recommended range (usually 120–130 °C). Continued high-rpm driving accelerates oil breakdown and engine wear.
What this indicator means
The oil temperature sensor measures in the sump outlet or the oil cooler. Normal is 90–110 °C in cruise, 120–130 °C under heavy load. Above that means either excessive engine load or a problem with the oil cooling system (low oil, aged oil, clogged oil radiator).
Common causes
- Long high-rpm driving in hot weather
- Low oil level (check the dipstick)
- Aged oil that has lost its thermal stability
- Clogged oil radiator (leaves outside, sludge inside)
- Failed oil pump
- Oil viscosity too high for the season (5W-60 instead of 5W-30)
What to do as a driver
Reduce revs and pull off the motorway. Check the dipstick. If below MIN, top up. Let the engine idle for 5–10 min — the light should clear. If it stays on, diagnostics are needed (oil radiator, pump).
Safety
Important: overheated oil loses viscosity — risk of bearing damage. Do not push high revs until the cause is found.
