EBD — electronic brakeforce distribution

The amber EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) icon fires when the electronic brakeforce distribution between axles is not working. Often lights with the red brake light — needs immediate attention.

What this indicator means

EBD is a software layer on top of ABS. It distributes braking force between front and rear axles based on load, road condition and speed. On failure the car brakes with equal force at all wheels, which can lead to rear-axle slide under hard braking.

Common causes

  • ABS hydraulic block fault
  • Rear wheel-speed sensor
  • Critically low brake fluid
  • Rear-axle load sensor issue
  • CAN-bus break between ABS and ECU

What to do as a driver

Check brake fluid level in the reservoir — MIN or below can trigger an EBD fault. Read C-codes with an adapter. EBD faults often accompany ABS faults — repair is joint.

Safety

Critical: under emergency braking the rear axle may lock and slide. Avoid hard braking, repair immediately.
