Clicking or popping noise when turning
Clicking or crunching sound when turning the wheel — classic CV joint and tie rod symptoms.
Clicking when turning the wheel to full lock is a classic worn or damaged CV (constant velocity) joint. Usually the outer CV — it takes more stress at extreme steering angles.
Crunching or rumbling at moderate steering angles (lane changes) may be tie rod ends, ball joints, or a worn wheel bearing.
OBD-II gives little here — it's a mechanical fault. But check WSS and ABS codes: a worn wheel bearing affects the speed sensor signal and can trigger ABS faults.
First diagnostic steps
- With car stationary, turn wheel to full lock and press throttle — distinct click = CV joint
- Inspect CV boot for tears and grease leakage
- Check ball joint and tie rod end for play
- Read live WSS data for uneven signal from one wheel (bad bearing)
- On a lift, spin the wheel by hand and check for axial and radial play
