Toyota Corolla and Camry — Common OBD-II Issues: 2ZR, M20A D-4ST, VVT-iE, TPMS
Top DTC codes for Toyota Corolla E210 and Camry XV70: 2ZR-FE/FAE naturally aspirated, 2.0 M20A-FKS D-4ST, Atkinson VVT-iE hybrid, TPMS sensor codes — OBD-II without dealer tools.
Toyota Corolla (E210, 2018+) and Camry (XV70, 2017+) are known for reliability. But even these vehicles have characteristic OBD-II faults — particularly related to VVT systems, TPMS, and D-4ST direct injection specifics.
1.8 2ZR-FE / 2ZR-FAE (Corolla E210): Naturally Aspirated Petrol
P0016 / P0017 — VVT Correlation 2ZR
The 2ZR-FE and 2ZR-FAE have VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing) on the intake.
Symptoms:
- Unstable idle on cold start
- P0016 with poor quality oil or low oil level
Causes:
- VVT actuator (cam phaser) — carbon deposits from low-quality oil use
- Stretched timing chain after 120,000 km without oil changes

P0301–P0304 — Misfires 2ZR-FAE

- Misfires during first warm-up → check spark plugs (replace every 30,000 km)
2.0 M20A-FKS (Corolla E210 GR Sport, Corolla Cross): D-4ST
The newer M20A-FKS with D-4ST (dual injection: Direct + Port) — less prone to carbon, but:
P2187 — Lean Mixture M20A
Even with D-4ST when oil separator is clogged:

Check: with a clean oil separator, LTFT should be < ±3%.
P0300 — Unstable Combustion During D-4 ↔ Port Switching
M20A switches between injection modes (low load → port only, high load → direct only):

VVT-iE differs from standard VVT:

Camry XV40 / XV50 — 2AR-FE and 2GR-FE engines
Earlier Camry generations have their own set of typical codes, different from the XV70.
P0011 — VVT-i Bank 1 over-advanced
The most common code on the 2AR-FE past 100,000 km. In 70% of cases the culprit is a clogged VVT solenoid (OCV). Symptoms: longer cold start and a shake in the first 3–5 seconds. Order of work: change to 0W-20 oil (Toyota Genuine or API SN Plus), clean the intake OCV, and only then replace the solenoid (~$50).
P0420 — catalyst efficiency below threshold Bank 1
On the 2AR-FE this is more often the downstream O2 sensor than the converter. Check live data: if the downstream sensor mirrors the upstream one, the sensor is at fault ($60–100). If the downstream sits at 0.6–0.7 V while the upstream keeps switching, the converter is genuinely gone (~$800 OEM).
P0171 — lean condition Bank 1
On the 2GR-FE V6 it is usually a leaking intake manifold gasket or a cracked PCV. Criterion: LTFT above +12% at warm idle is a guaranteed vacuum leak. Test manifold joints with soapy water.
P0300 — random misfire
On the 2AR-FE past 120,000 km it is worn ignition coils. Replace all four together (Denso ~$50 each). Cheap aftermarket coils tend to last about six months.
P0125 — engine takes too long to reach operating temperature
Thermostat, stress point at 100,000–140,000 km. Symptoms: weak cabin heat, fuel consumption up 10–15%. Replacement with coolant runs about $200 at a shop or $60 DIY.
P0031 / P0037 — O2 heater circuit
Typical past 150,000 km. Not critical: the code appears when the heater circuit does not match what the ECU expects. Replacing the affected sensor costs $70–120.
P0130 — upstream O2 slow response
Past 200,000 km the sensor simply wears out. Symptoms are mild — slightly higher consumption. Schedule the replacement with the next service.
C1201 — ABS/ECU communication
On XV40/XV50 this is usually corrosion on the ABS sensor connectors after winter roads. Disassemble, clean and treat the contacts — that resolves 90% of cases.
What not to do on a Toyota
- Do not clear the code before diagnosing — it will come back and you lose the freeze frame
- Do not replace the converter on P0420 without checking the O2 sensors: that is $800 versus $80
- Do not run 5W-40 in a 2AR-FE — Toyota specifies 0W-20; the wrong viscosity causes VVT faults
