Toyota Prius Hybrid Diagnostics via OBD-II: HV Battery, P0A80, EV Mode
Complete OBD-II diagnostics for Toyota Prius Gen 2/3/4: P0A80 HV battery degradation, P3190 engine in hybrid mode, cell voltage check, PCU inverter — practical guide.
The Toyota Prius is the world’s most popular hybrid car. Prius Gen 2 (NHW20, 2003–2009), Gen 3 (ZVW30, 2009–2015), and Gen 4 (ZVW50, 2016+) share a similar Hybrid Synergy Drive architecture. OBD-II provides full access to HV battery health, MG1/MG2 motor status, and inverter data.
Hybrid Synergy Drive Architecture
Toyota HSD (Hybrid Synergy Drive):
- ICE (1.8L 2ZR-FXE or 1.5L 1NZ-FXE) — primary power source
- MG1 — generator (ICE starter and power-split CVT control)
- MG2 — traction motor
- HV Battery — NiMH (Prius Gen 2/3) or Li-ion (Gen 4)
- PCU (Power Control Unit) — inverter
P0A80 — HV Battery: Capacity Degraded
The most common and expensive code on Prius.
What P0A80 means: The BMS (Battery Management System) has detected that individual battery modules have remaining capacity below the manufacturer threshold (approximately 70% of nominal).
Degradation stages:
- Battery still works but SoC constantly fluctuates → engine starts more frequently
- Warning triangle on dashboard + P0A80
- Car enters limp mode: low power, engine never shuts off
Checking cells via Live Data:
HV Battery Cell Voltage 1..28 (Gen 2/3) or 1..96 (Gen 4 Li-ion)
- Healthy: all cells within ±0.1V of each other at 50% SoC
- Degraded: one or more cells < 1.1V (NiMH) or > 0.3V below average (Li-ion)
- Dead: cell < 0.8V or voltage collapses under load
Important: If cell voltage difference > 0.3V but SoC exists → perform balancing (full charge → full discharge → recharge) before deciding on battery replacement.
P3190 / P3191 — Engine in Hybrid Mode: Won’t Start / Stalled
P3190: ICE (1NZ/2ZR) cannot start in HV mode (MG1 not cranking or fuel system failure)
P3191: Engine stalled during HV driving
Causes:
- Spark plug failure (1NZ-FXE requires replacement every 37,000 miles — iridium plugs)
- Fuel pump or fuel filter problem
- Camshaft position sensor fault (P0016 + P3190 together)

P0A1F — Battery Energy Control Module (BECM): Fault
Causes:
- Low 12V auxiliary battery voltage (service battery!) → BMS doesn’t initialise
- Poor contact in battery module (oxidation)
- Failed HV system main relay (contactor)
WARNING: Prius has 2 batteries: 12V (for ECU/auxiliary systems) and HV (200–300V). If the 12V battery dies → P0A1F or P0A80 can appear even with a healthy HV battery.
PCU Inverter: Overheating Codes
PCU cooling: Prius has a separate closed coolant circuit for the PCU (inverter, MG1/MG2). The PCU cooling pump is electric and can fail after 75,000+ miles.

Common on Prius after 60,000 miles — unrelated to hybrid system.

Prius Battery Reconditioning via OBD
