Subaru EJ Engine OBD Diagnostics: Outback, Forester, Impreza, WRX
OBD-II diagnostics for Subaru EJ20/EJ25 boxer engines: P0301 head gasket misfires, P0420/P0430 cats, STI flat-six knock detection, AWD DCCDcodes — complete guide.
Subaru’s EJ-series horizontally-opposed boxer engines are iconic. EJ20 (Impreza, WRX, Forester) and EJ25 (Outback, Legacy, Forester XT) have loyal fan bases but also well-documented failure modes that OBD-II diagnostics can catch early.
EJ25 Head Gasket: The Classic Subaru Problem
The EJ25 SOHC (Phase 1 and Phase 2, 1996–2010) in Outback and Legacy has a well-known head gasket failure issue — internal coolant leak between combustion chamber and cooling passage.
P0301/P0302/P0303/P0304 — Misfires from Head Gasket
Head gasket failure causes coolant to enter cylinders:
- White smoke from exhaust
- Coolant consumption without external leaks
- Misfires in the affected cylinder(s)
Live Data indicators:
Engine Coolant Temperature— rapid overheating if coolant leaks into combustionMisfire Count Cyl X— elevated in one cylinder (where HG has failed)STFT Bank 1/2— rich on affected bank if coolant entering combustion
Block test confirmation: Combustion gas detector on radiator cap → CO2 presence = HG failure.
P0303 / P0304 Specific to Cylinders 3 and 4 (right bank)
The right bank (cylinders 3 and 4) is more prone to HG failure on EJ25 due to uneven cooling distribution.
EJ20 WRX/STI: Turbo and Knock Codes
The turbocharged EJ20T (WRX) and EJ20G (STI older) are performance engines sensitive to boost and knock.
P0325 — Knock Sensor 1: Circuit Malfunction
Subaru uses knock sensors on the EJ block. Codes:
- P0325 — Knock sensor circuit fault
- P0330 — Knock sensor 2 circuit fault
These often appear after heat cycling ages the sensor wiring.
Critical note: On turbocharged EJ20, failing knock sensors can allow the ECU to allow damaging detonation without pulling timing. Replace faulty knock sensors immediately.
P0299 — Underboost (WRX EJ20T)
- Boost solenoid (TMIC boost control) failure
- Charge pipe leak (intercooler to throttle body)
- Wastegate actuator rod corroded (common in UK/north climates)
Live Data WRX:
Boost Pressureat WOT 4,000 RPM: stock WRX: ~170–190 kPaKnock Retard Total (Bank 1)at WOT: should be 0°; > 3° = detonation detected
P0420 / P0430 — Catalyst Below Threshold (Outback, Forester)
EJ25 naturally-aspirated (Outback 2.5, Forester 2.5) — catalysts wear at 120,000–160,000 km.
Subaru-specific note: EJ25 DOHC (AVCS) variant has separate cats for Bank 1 and Bank 2. P0420 and P0430 can both appear together.
AVCS (Active Valve Control System) note: If AVCS cam timing isn’t working correctly → incomplete combustion → damaged catalyst.
Check catalyst:

O2 B1S2andO2 B2S2at steady 60 mph - Healthy: both stable ~0.65V
- Failing: oscillating with upstream sensor
AVCS (Subaru’s VVT System): Codes
AVCS is Subaru’s variable valve timing on DOHC EJ engines (Impreza 2.0R DOHC, Forester SG 2.0X).
Codes:
- P0011 — Intake cam timing: over-advanced (Bank 1)
- P0014 — Exhaust cam timing: over-advanced (Bank 1)
- P0021 / P0024 — Bank 2 equivalents
Causes:
- Clogged OCV (Oil Control Valve) — responds to Subaru-specified 5W-30 synthetic
- AVCS solenoid wiring corrosion (common in humid UK conditions)
Subaru AWD (DCCD / VTD / ACT): Driveline Codes
Subaru’s all-wheel drive systems:
| Code | System | Description |
|---|---|---|
| C0040 | All | Rear wheel speed sensor fault |
| C1234 | DCCD (STI) | Centre diff torque sensor |
| P0841 | VTD/AWD | Rear differential solenoid pressure |
| U0401 | All | Lost communication with AWD control unit |
DCCD (Driver’s Control Centre Differential) on STI:
- Automatic + manual locking centre diff
- P1XX codes specific to DCCD if centre diff solenoid fails
- Live Data:
DCCD Lock %— 0% = open; 100% = locked
Subaru FB Engine (Modern Replacement for EJ)
FB20/FB25 engines (2011+, Forester SJ/SK, Outback BS/BT) replaced EJ series.
FB improvements: No head gasket issue (redesigned coolant passages). But FB25 has:
- P0303/P0304 from cylinder wall wear at 80,000+ km on FB25 (non-direct injection)
- AVCS similar codes (P0011, P0014) — same OCV sensitivity to oil quality
Summary Table
| Model | Engine | Top Codes |
|---|---|---|
| Outback/Legacy 2.5 | EJ25 SOHC | P030X HG misfires, P0420 |
| Forester XT | EJ25T turbo | P0299, P0325 knock |
| Impreza WRX | EJ20T | P0299 boost, knock retard |
| Impreza STI | EJ20G/EJ207 | P0325, P0330, DCCD |
| Forester 2.0R | EJ20 DOHC AVCS | P0011 AVCS, P0420 |
Subaru EJ key maintenance: use 5W-30 full synthetic (not conventional oil), check coolant pH every 2 years (EJ25), replace spark plugs at 60,000 km, and address any knock sensor codes immediately.
