P0751 and P0752: shift solenoid A performance and stuck off
A shift solenoid that is electrically perfect can still be mechanically stuck. Knowing which of the two you have decides whether the pan comes off.
Shift solenoids are on-off valves that direct hydraulic pressure to the right clutch pack for the gear the module wants. A typical gearbox has several, and the combination of which are energised determines which gear is selected.

Electrical versus mechanical
The key distinction, and the codes make it for you.
P0753 is electrical. The circuit is open, shorted, or drawing the wrong current. Measurable with a meter.
P0751 and P0752 are mechanical or hydraulic. The circuit works, the solenoid is being commanded, and the expected result did not happen. The module knows this because it checked the gear ratio afterwards and found the wrong answer.
That second case is the one where the pan may need to come off — but not before fluid and pressure are checked.
Symptoms by which gear is affected
Because solenoid combinations produce gears, a single stuck solenoid removes a predictable set of them.
- Missing gears. The gearbox skips from second to fourth, or refuses to leave a particular ratio.
- Stuck in one gear, which is the limp mode response: limp mode, what it is and how to exit.
- Harsh or delayed shifts into specific gears.
- Gear ratio codes naming the affected gears: P0731 to P0736 incorrect gear ratio.
The pattern of which gears work is diagnostic. Note it before anything else: drive through the range, note every gear that engages and every one that does not, and write it down.
Causes, in order
Fluid condition
First, always. Solenoids have small internal clearances and filter screens, and degraded fluid carrying clutch debris and varnish is what blocks them.
A solenoid that sticks intermittently often improves after a fluid and filter service. The counter-argument you will hear — that changing fluid in a neglected gearbox causes failure — is largely a myth, and the reality is discussed in automatic transmission fluid myths.
Fluid level
Low fluid means the pump draws air. Pressure collapses under load and the solenoid cannot do its job regardless of its condition: automatic transmission ATF diagnostics.
The solenoid
Sticking mechanically, or with a failed winding. Many are replaceable with the pan removed, as part of the solenoid pack.
The valve body
Bore wear leaks pressure internally. The solenoid works, the pressure does not arrive.
The internal harness
Fluid wicking through a hardened case connector seal, producing several transmission codes at once.
What to check in the data
Commanded gear against actual gear, plus engine RPM and vehicle speed.

Record a full acceleration through every gear, then a deceleration back down. Downshifts use different solenoid combinations and can fail independently.

The pan-off decision
Removing the pan is not a rebuild. On many gearboxes it gives access to the solenoid pack, the filter and the valve body — which covers most of the causes above.
What comes out of the pan is itself diagnostic:
- Fine grey sludge — normal wear over a long life.
- Metal flakes or chunks — something is failing mechanically. A solenoid will not fix that.
- Friction material — clutch wear.
Ask what was found. It changes the prognosis.
After the repair
Reset the transmission adaptations. The module has been compensating for the fault, and leaving those adaptations in place gives poor shift quality with a healthy gearbox.

Sequence
- Map which gears work and which do not.
- Check fluid level and condition.
- Read the transmission module for the specific codes.
- Log commanded against actual gear through a full range.
- Drop the pan — solenoids, filter, and evidence in one operation.
- Reset adaptations afterwards.
