P0460 to P0463: fuel level sensor circuit faults
A wrong fuel gauge is annoying. What people miss is that the EVAP monitor needs a correct fuel level to run at all, so this code quietly blocks an emissions test.
The fuel level sender is a float on an arm, moving a wiper across a resistive track. It is simple, it is inside the tank, and it wears out because the wiper rubs the same few spots for years.

The consequence nobody mentions
Beyond the gauge, fuel level feeds two systems:
The EVAP monitor, which will only run when the tank is between roughly a quarter and three quarters full. Too full and there is no vapour space to test; too empty and the readings are unstable.
Misfire detection, which is suppressed at low fuel to avoid blaming the ignition system for fuel starvation: P0313 and P0314 misfire with low fuel.
So a fuel level fault means the EVAP monitor may never complete, and a car with an incomplete monitor fails an emissions test regardless of its actual emissions.
That is the reason to fix this beyond the inconvenience of the gauge.

P0461: the worn track
Range/performance is the most common of the four, and it has a characteristic symptom.
The float arm spends most of its life in a narrow band — the region between quarter and three quarters, where a regularly-driven car lives. The resistive track wears there first.
The result: a gauge that reads correctly when full and when nearly empty, and jumps or sticks in the middle. Owners describe it as “it sits on half for ages then drops fast”.
That description is a worn sender, not a fuel consumption problem.
P0462 and P0463: the extremes
Circuit low or high means voltage outside the plausible range.
- Open circuit — a broken wire or a failed track section. The gauge usually reads empty or full and stays there.
- Short circuit — chafed wiring, or a float that has sunk and is pulling the arm beyond its range.
- Connector corrosion at the tank, which is exposed underneath the car.
A gauge pinned at exactly full or exactly empty and not moving is a circuit fault, not a measurement.
The float itself
A float that has absorbed fuel and sunk reads empty regardless of the actual level. This happens with older plastic floats and with foam floats in vehicles that have run on high-ethanol blends.
The tell: a gauge that reads empty with a full tank, and a trip computer that predicts zero range while the car drives normally.
Multiple senders on larger tanks
Vehicles with saddle-shaped tanks — common on four-wheel-drive models where the propshaft runs under the tank — have two senders, one in each half, with a transfer pump between them.
That produces its own symptom: a gauge that drops normally, then jumps back up when the transfer pump moves fuel across. Or, if the transfer pump has failed, a car that runs out of fuel with a quarter tank showing.
On a vehicle with two senders, a fuel level complaint may be a pump problem rather than a sender problem.
What to check in the data
The fuel level percentage is exposed on most vehicles.

That last row deserves a note. Instrument clusters damp the gauge heavily so it does not swing on every corner. The live data value moves more than the needle does, and a small disagreement between them is normal.
Access and cost
The sender is inside the tank, typically reached through an access panel under the rear seat or boot floor. Where there is no panel, the tank has to come down.
That access difference is the whole cost of the job, and it is worth establishing before deciding whether to live with it.
Before committing: check the connector at the tank and the wiring first. Corrosion there produces identical symptoms and is far cheaper to fix.
Step by step
- Read the live fuel level value, not just the gauge.
- Fill the tank and watch how the reading behaves through a full tank.
- Note where it sticks or jumps — mid-range means a worn track.
- Check the connector at the tank for corrosion.
- Check EVAP monitor readiness, which this fault may be blocking.
- Replace the sender if the track is worn — it is not repairable.
