P0316: misfire detected on startup — the cold-start-only fault
P0316 only counts misfires in the first seconds after cranking. That narrow window points at a specific short list of causes that a warm-engine test will never reproduce.
P0316 “Misfire Detected on Startup (First 1000 Revolutions)” is a code with a built-in clue most people ignore. The ECU is not saying the engine misfires. It is saying it misfires only in the first few seconds, then runs cleanly. That timing eliminates most of the usual suspects immediately.
Note that P0316 is not among the codes with a public reference page on this site, unlike P0301-P0304 — but it almost always arrives alongside one of those, and the cylinder number tells you where to look.
Why the first 1000 revolutions are special
Cold start is the hardest condition an engine faces:
- Fuel does not vaporise well against cold metal, so the ECU commands a much richer mixture.
- Cylinder walls are cold, so compression pressure and temperature are at their lowest.
- Oil is thick and pressure takes a moment to build.
- Oxygen sensors are cold, so the engine runs open loop with no feedback correction.
Any weakness that a warm, closed-loop engine can compensate for becomes visible here. Once the engine warms, the compensation hides it again — which is why a workshop that tests your car after it has idled for twenty minutes finds nothing.
The short list of causes
1. Spark plugs at end of life
The most common cause. A worn plug with a widened gap needs more voltage to fire, and a cold, rich, dense mixture is the hardest thing to ignite. It fires fine warm and fails cold. Replace as a set — see spark plug replacement interval.
2. Ignition coil breaking down when cold
Micro-cracks in coil insulation open up at low temperature and close as the coil warms. A coil that tests fine on the bench can fail every cold morning. The swap test applies, but you must perform it on a genuinely cold engine.
3. Leaking fuel injector
An injector that weeps overnight floods its cylinder. On start, that cylinder is far too rich to fire until the excess clears. The signature is a code that appears only after the car has stood for several hours, and never after a short stop.
4. Loss of fuel rail pressure overnight
A failed check valve in the pump or a leaking pressure regulator lets the rail bleed down. The first crank then runs on insufficient pressure. Test: turn the ignition on without starting, then off, and watch rail pressure in live data. It should hold for minutes, not seconds. Related: P0087 fuel rail pressure too low.
5. Valve stem seals
Oil seeping past the seals overnight pools on the piston and fouls the plug. The giveaway is a puff of blue smoke on start that clears within seconds — see exhaust smoke colours.
6. Low compression on one cylinder
Cold compression is lower than warm compression. A cylinder already marginal warm may not fire at all cold. If the misfire persists as the engine warms, this moves up the list considerably.
7. Variable valve timing not at the cold-start position
Many engines park the cam at a specific position for starting. A dirty oil control valve or a sticking phaser leaves it wrong. Look for P0011 or P0014 as company.
How to catch it in the act
This code demands data from the actual cold start, which means setting up the night before.
- Connect the adapter and start logging before cranking.
- Record misfire counters, fuel trims, coolant temperature and rail pressure through the first two minutes.
- Look at which cylinder accumulates counts and how quickly they stop.
Counts that stop within 10 seconds point at fuelling. Counts that continue for a minute point at ignition or compression. Counts that never fully stop mean you have a warm misfire too, and P0316 was just the first symptom to trip.
The freeze frame from the stored code confirms coolant temperature at the moment of the fault — a useful sanity check that it really was a cold event.
Seasonal pattern is a clue

After the repair
The only valid test is a genuine cold start after the car has stood overnight. Clear the code, leave it, and log the next morning’s start. A quiet first minute with zero misfire counts is the confirmation.
